Default side to side freeplay on pushrods? how much is acceptable

So I began hearing a rattling or clacking noise coming from the top end right side. The motor was totally rebuilt top and bottom this spring so figured the rods needed adjusting. When checking for freeplay I have none up and down and slight side to side on 2 of them. When I say slight I mean probably 1/16 both ways. There is no trace of binding in fact they feel like they spin a little too easily. So is that enough freeplay to warrant adjustment. Thx

Pretty sure as little as possible. They should be able to turn just but not be loose...look in the stickys for the info on adjusting your pushrods, should explain everything for you.

You should have no side to side play.
I would look at the possibility of mismatched parts,
or extreme wear.

K. I will adjust and recheck that sideplay. Could that amount of sideplay cause rattling type noise coming from that area as described before?

Thumbs up

Adjusted tappets and rechecked adjustment. Definitely fixd the minor freeplay side to side. Started her up and got to operating temp. Heard the same sound for a brief time and then it stopped. Is it possible my top end noise was coming from this as I did not touch anything else???

All I have to do is go for a rip tomorrow and see if it holds that way.

Thx to all

One more thing. What is the torque on those locknuts? I had a hell of a time getting all but one loose. Even rounded one a little bit. My Indy wrench must have cranked those bastards on there.

I have had a tapping noise fixed by simply undoing the rocker shaft nuts and turning the shaft 180 degrees and retightening them again.

Cool info there dasrite. If the rattling comes back I will have to tweak my rockernuts and shafts. Any idea why the shafts would cause the noise?
