Exclamation Oil Leakage, NEW to XLForum

FIRST: I'm new to these Forums, so trying to navigate through these threads has been difficult.

SECOND: I've acquired a 77 Sportster. It hadn't run since 1998. I've spent 2.5 years trying to make it go. I've done a few things on it (and I'm new to this mechanic stuffs, too), but with the help of a friend, it lives on. It's been a mess, one thing fixed another thing fails, but that seems to be what I've been reading, at least until it becomes a regular rider.

THIRD: My major issue currently is oil leaking. I took it for a short ride with my bro-in-law, and the sucker is smoking like crazy from all of the oil burning off of the pipes, fins, and anywhere else it's hot enough.

I have already readjusted the pushrods, and replaced the cork seals, and I checked them again today to make sure adjustments were good. I probably could replace the cork again, but I just wanted to check adjustments. Everything seemed kosher. Until I road it tonight. Still leaks significantly.

When I got it back home after another short ride tonight, I noticed that i have oil leaking from the cable going from the right side of the case to the speedometer. WHA!?

Any advice is good advice at the moment. Thanks for this outlet!

First ya gotta locate the source of the leaks. A good cleaning and de-greasing is where ya start. A liberal coating of baby powder can be a good way to find leaks as can paper towels tucked into various spots while you run/ride yer machine.

Once you find the source then the gurus can tell ya what the appropriate fix should be.

BTW, I can't see yer pics and, most importantly, post ALL your Ironhead questions in the Ironhead section of the forum. Ironheaders almost never leave that area.
