Default 1979 1000 xlh cam cover specs/info... PLEASE!!!

Hey, in kind of an interesting position only the ill-prepared would find one's self. Took off the cam cover to find out what I'm working with. Good news as far as that is concerned however. About every bolt fell to the floor and am having a time finding what lengths go where. Also I do have a manual but couldn't find the tightening sequence. And the tourque I found, (in the 125 range) seems AWFULLY high? So, those 3 questions answered would really, REALLY help my month back on track. I truly appreciate any time given in answering these problems. Thank you, immensely, hardtail

I have the '79-'85 HD service manual in front of me. It says "tighten all screws evenly to 80-110 in-lbs torque." No mention of sequence.

There's a specific sequence for tightening down Evo Sportster cam covers, not sure why the manual doesn't show one here.

Hold the cam cover in your left hand and one by one drop screws into the holes.

The screws will all protrude through the cam cover by an equal (nearly) amount.

Just juggle the screws until you get them into the correct position.

As long as you just tighten them by hand you'll be ok. Don't snug them all the way down in one go.

Thank you all! I. Reference to ferrous head's post, by seeing the difference in length gths out of the back (engine side) of the cam cover.. . That will tell me which screw needs to be where?

Hippy's picture will dhow you where they go but you can just check them as I described.

These cam covers are pretty stiff and I doubt you'll warp them by not using the correct sequence for tightening but it doesn't hurt to use best practice when you can.

Nope. Don't shim them.

There's a Service Bulletin about no longer using the shims.

They are too thin and can break up in use. From memory only 7 thou.

Only there to help stop a bit of the clatter you get from the cams sliding back and forth.

Us deaf old guys could never hear them in the first place.
