Thought I'd do a summary before replacing my "one side cartridge" forks with a set of longer travel 2008 damper tube forks with Race Tech Gold Valves. And maybe starting a new thread.
My initial concern was ride quality. I wanted something pleasant to ride down the road casually. I got that as best I could with HD's cartridge but it came with compromises I found I really don't like.
Running out to NM this year definitely showed that. It does "ride better", pretty nice actually, but it never feels secure because it doesn't keep the front tire on the pavement. I reduced fork oil viscosity so the forks would move over square edge bumps but that made low speed compression damping virtually non-existent. Handling thru the twisties is definitely better with thicker fork oil, but then runnin' down the road ride quality really suffers. The damping of HD's bargain basement cartridge sucks. Just like their emulsion rear shocks.
I'm fussy, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I've got all the parts for my next step so stay tuned.
