Quick query if I can team.
Is it standard practice to fit the large o ring on the manifold side of the carby..when fitting to the branch manifold rubber adaptor.? Hope that make sense?
Seems to create air leak when I do..ok without?

The Branch manifold for 74 has two stock oring connections to the heads and one larger rubber adapter to the carb. That rubber adapter has two band clamps. Is that what you have?
If you are saying there is an additional o ring inside the adapter remove it.

a lot of people will roll the ring onto the manifold, fit the alignment and roll the the ring into the groove instead of fiddling both operations.
a big issue is usually with the head side especially so when the little lip extension is broken.
when i do mine, i will use glass oven tape over the o-ring, once heated, it will seal the joint, BUT, a bear to remove.

Have you tried rubber electrical tape (friction tape)? It does a great job backing up the o-ring and easily removed later. Not vinyl electrical tape.

electric tape will work but heat and fuel are its worst enemies. you will have a big goo on your hands. oven tape takes the heat and being glass fiber, fuel does not touch it. the big problem is you have to cut the tape off and then the adhesive has to come off with a solvent, but once on there, it is there.

The fit should be tight. If the adapter is in good shape you should not need any wraps. Make sure you have the right size adapter. Also use the support between the a/c and the lifter pad. You can always lube the adapter with diluted liquid dish soap for an easier install.
