Default Thread pitch for 91 front engine mount bolts.

Does anyone know what thread pitch is used for the front engine mount bolts?

Oops, it's a 2001, not a 91.

I helped a neighbor do some work on his 2001, and the bolts in there were 3/8-24. Both were falling out and there was no nut on the lower one. The upper bolt is blind on the right side of bike, so the bracket is threaded. The 3/8-24 does not thread into that bracket, so we just put a new nut on the lower bolt and tightened all the bolts involved but had to leave the top bolt out so he could ride home.

Looking at the bracket with a flashlight it looked like coarse thread so I am wondering if someone has replaced them with 24 pitch instead of 16? I don't want to try to chase the threads until I am sure that it is really supposed to be 24.

These are the two bolts that go through the case if the engine I am asking about.

Both rear (top/bottom) bolts are suppose to be (4413) 3/8"x24x5-1/2 hex grade 5.

Yep - Rear two holes of the Left Front (Lower) Motor Mount - Item#9 (x2) on the Parts Diagram is 3/8"-24

The bolt for the bottom-most Rear hole goes thru the Right Front (Lower) Motor Mount and uses Item#20 (P/N 7780), a 3/8"-24 Flange Nut.

The bolt for the top-most Rear hole of the Right Front (Lower) Motor Mount is threaded directly into the motor mount. That should be 3/8"-24 as well. I would surmise that if you had to, you could put a thin nut on the outside of the motor mount if you got a 1/4" longer bolt.

Thanks guys.

I can see there are threads in there that look fine as I look in from the right side, but the bolt will not start from the left side. I can rig a tap to get in there to clean the threads. It will need to be the 5.5" length plus extra for the T handle. Or better yet, I can notch a new grade 8 bolt to see if I can clean the threads that way.

Thanks for confirming the pitch. I just didn't want to force the wrong tap/thread cleaner into a 16 pitch hole.

I'd just take the mount off and chase that way.
The drill size is bigger for a fine thread but the threads are taller on a course bolt.
It may be best to use a nut and a longer bolt but you'll know more about that after you chase it.

Technically, you could also chase it from the right side (installed) also.

On my 1991, the bolt into the head is 3/8-16 and nut on the stud the same. The two bolts that hold the bracket to the frame are 3/8-24. I've got mine apart right now. This is the front upper engine mounting bracket.

Thanks guys. So, I can't ever remember shit. (CRS). The bike is actually a 1999. The third time he told me what it is finally sunk in. I got a 6" grade 8 (3/8-24) bolt to cut into a thread chaser, but the threads on it looked and felt so clean and sharp that I just ran it in and it cleaned the threads without any notching. So then we got a new 5.5" bolt and a 3/8" spacer (there is a gap between the case and the bracket). Sanded a bit off the spacer and it went in nicely. Some locktite and a few turns of the wrench and the job is done.
