UPDATE: I just came back from a ride and decided to try another way of purging the fuel in the carb. When the engine died, I pulled out the enrichener knob and guess what? The engine fired right up and ran at high idle for about 4 seconds before dying. When I tried to start it again with just the accelerator pump, no go. So, this method got what the accelerator pump couldn't. The carb is definitely, totally empty now.
Thanks for making me think this out.

It's easier to let the carb run empty after every ride than grab a screwdriver and something to catch the gas in.
