Question Buell S1/M2 Dyna 2000 7 pin to 8 pin wiring schematic.

Good day all. Could you please take a look at the wiring pin out table below?

I need to remove the 7 pin Canon plug and fit an 8 pin Deutsch plug for 1997 to 2000 M2. The wiring colours are taken from a 1998 S1 shop manual on the right and the instruction sheet for a Dyna 2000 twin fire ignition box on the left. I am pretty confident I have the colours/pins correct but I am not an electrical person. Comments welcomed.

Thanks.

Assuming the references you specified as defining the two wiring definitions, as far as I can tell, the conversion connections would be right.

I don't have the 2000 M2 manual - Does that model have the same style Ignition Module as the 98 S1 (not X1)? If so, I think you'll be good to go.

Thank you. I believe the 8 pin Deutsch connector was used S1/M2 from 96 to 2000. I believe the X1 style ECU was used (for ignition control) on M2 model years 01 and M2. Anyhow, small beer in the scheme of things.

Again thank you so much. I have some confidence now that I am not going to toast something after I change from Canon to Deutsch connector!

All the best.

BR.

Good Luck...

BTW - My docs indicate the X1 to be the dual-connector ECM started in '99...

(Thanks Aaron for the correct info)

The Buell X1 was only made from 1999-2002, and it's EFI. It has a single ECM that does both spark and fueling. No separate ignition module at all. The same is true for all 1999-2002 Buell S3 models. The parts books refer to the ECM as a "control module"

The 2001-2002 ignition module found on the M2 is an actual ignition module. Since the M2 is carbureted, it provides no control of fueling. Although it has a similar appearance to the ECM found on 1999-2002 X1 & S3 models, the part number is different, and the parts books refer to it as an "ignition module".

This 2001-2002 M2 ignition module is also a bastard, not found on any other Harley or Buell, and no aftermarket replacements available for it. The only high performance version of it I've ever seen was the Buell Pro-Series version which was offered back in the day. It's an issue when someone comes to us for a performance package for a 2001-2002 M2. We basically have to tell him to chuck it and wire in a nose cone module.

The other carbureted Buell models (1995-1996 S2, 1996-1998 S1/S1W, 1997-2000 M2, and 1997-1998 S3) all came with 8-pin modules, except 49-state 1995 S2's, which came with 7-pin modules.

There's an adapter available to connect an 8-pin module to a 7-pin bike, and another one available to go the other direction, i.e. a 7-pin module to an 8-pin bike.

Thanks Aaron for posting - I don't speak Buell very often.

I was thinking S1 when it now seems I posted X1.

I changed my posts to make them consistent with your corrections. (I don't want to pass bad information)

Thanks.

Thanks for the information.

I want to avoid the 7 pin to 8 pin converters since firstly they cost almost as much as I paid for the Dyna 2000 ignition module! Secondly, it's just more wiring and extra connectors to have a fault.

Hence me trying to determine the correct pin out for the Dyna module using the 8 pin Deutsch connector. It seems my determination of the pin out shown above is fine?

Thanks for the input.

Please independently check the pin out of the Dyna 2000 as shown above. The more people that look at my pin out schedule the better. If you do this before I do, please be sure to confirm it works. Thanks.
