Question Stock 1982 XLS Gas Tank Mounts

Good Evening all,

I just looked and I haven’t posted since 2013. Crazy to see what I was talking about then.

Anyways,

I am wanting to install the stock tank on my bike. It’s a 1982 XLS. I don’t have the stock mounts anymore since I swapped tanks back in 2013, and I am having trouble finding ones online. Does anyone have or know where I can get some? The tank on the front hooks and all I’m finding is “Quick Bob Gas Tank Mounts”?
They look similar to photos I’ve seen of the stock ones. Also, the back mount my dad said he remembers it being some kind of clamp?
Thanks in advance!

Click this link to an early 1980s XLS Roadster tank - same as on the bike in my below sig pic. It is almost identical to a Superglide tank of the same era. The mount kits were commonly available about a decade ago. They are probably the parts that you need [I hope ]. Try a google search, etc.

You'll probably have to track the parts down one by one - most everything fuel tank related for the 82 was one year only. The Parts Book shows one front bracket, two rear brackets (each with a different tank support), a fuel tank strap, a fuel tank strap end, a tank mounting cushion, and a bunch of little hardware pieces. Not having an XLS, I don't know if you need all those brackets or just some of them.

I was able to find the rear brackets and tank strap on ebay, but no luck on the front bracket at all. It looks like the hook-over bracket was only used from 82 to Early 83, so that one's going to be a tough find.

The original front mount parts for the XLS tanks were not very good at all. Two rubber O-rings, the ones used for installing the intake manifold, are what "everybody" used; I believe the big twin guys with the SuperGlides also used them. Once my mechanic convinced me about this I never looked back.

My '83 XLS only had the front pin and rubber mounts, and the two piece strap for the back. I was able to find the spacers, rubber pads, and rear pin. Part of the parts were from eBay, others were purchased from Ronnie's HD.
