Hey gang thanks for the replys. So far we want to look at the accelerator pump- it works fine. Somebody mentioned idle speed- how do I know??! Without a tach I have no clue. I'll try upping the idle speed a bit and see what that does, and I'll also put a larger pilot jet in her while I'm at it.

Thanks again all. Funny but I posted this same question on the hd forums and got not one reply.

Your bike is newer than mine, but I will tell you anyway.

The "barb fitting" where my gas line hooked to the carb was plastic, it was cracked and caused much the same problem as you describe. Yours will be brass, but a cracked fuel line between the tank and the carb could cause the same issue.

You loose very little gas, almost none when the engine is running (but it sucks air) and only what is in the short line when it is off, it can be hard to notice, smell more than anything else.

Worth a look perhaps.

are your intake seals leaking where they mate to the heads? That can cause all sorts of low RPM problems. I'd check that first before digging into the carb. Take a spray bottle with water or can of WD40 and spray the seals while the engine is running. If the idle speeds up or the bike dies this is your culprit.

a side note..... DON'T use carb or break clean..... trust me......

I had a similar issue when I first got my bike. I found that there were a couple of things wrong. First I found that my accelerator pump was sticking. I had a nasty stumble so I took the carb off fixed that. Second, after I did my mods, I had to go to a larger slow jet. I had a 44 in and went to a 46 and shimmed the needle. No such problems since. 96 Hugger.

Rubbermount_EVO Carb basics and jetting by reading the plugs

This thread has a step by step method for jetting by reading the plugs at throttle positions related to the fuel circuits in the carb. It is hidden in one of the carb tuning sticky indexes. There are many other good stickies there also. Properly tuned carbs run great.

I'm glad you asked that question! My '97 883 does the same thing and it drives me crazy. With the number of guys trying to help you out...I'm bound to find the right one for me as well. I'm gonna go try a couple of them right now. Good luck with yours.

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully the OP
got his issue resolved since he started
the thread one year ago.
After you've read some of the links
the guys posted, if you still have trouble
with the bike you might want to
start your own thread just for the sake
of being able to follow it a little better.
