Default Thanks!

Thanks a lot everyone. I changed the regulator and still have the same problem. Next I'll check the generator with a volt meter however the gen. Is fairly new so I'm gonna do what iron Mick suggested and take a closer look at the brushes. Thanks again everyone!

The best gen check is with an ammeter becvause it is most intuitive - the gen is supposed to put out 10 amps, this will tell you.

Get one from an auto parts, TSC, Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, Harbor Freight, etc. One intended for mounting in a dash. 0 to 30 range is best but 0 to 60 will do.

Otherwise do only the tests in the Sticky or from the factory service manual.

I have a question about the insulation on the generator wire posts. I was having a problem where one of the posts was turning and would cause the gen light to come on. All I would have to do to make gen work was to turn the post. So this spring I tightened the nut on the post and now the light is on all the time. I have taken it apart and found no damage, and I think all the insulators are there. In the close up pics IronMick posted it looks like one of the posts is touching the brass plate inside and the other isn't. Is that just by chance or is that the ways it is supposed to be?

I'm not a tech or mechanic. I had the gen light on at low idle and, as you described, it went off with rev. I did all the cleaning of terminals on the gen...Then, replaced the gen and regulator..same problem. What I found, was a lousy ( cylinder shaped) connector to the regulator. Can't remember if it was a three or four prong connector. When I squeezed the connector together, the light would go off. It would be 'ok' for a while..then the light would come on again. I bought a flat 'trailer connector', matched up the wires, plugged it in and sealed it with dielectric grease and taped it..That was many years ago and, it solved my problem. The 'proper' fix, for me, would have been to find and replace the original type connector but, I couldn't find one...My 'backyard' type fix has worked for many years now.

the turning post was a problem i had with my gen too. i made insulating washers out of a foam plate and added an extra nut onto each post. problem solved with that, but i also put new springs and brushes in while i was at it.

When the gen was working, the light was on and dim at idle but I am assuming that it was supposed to be since a the faster it spins the more juice it puts out. This was a case of while i was riding down the road the gen light would come on. I would just reach down and wiggle the wire till it went off.

The foam paper plate is a great idea! Never would have thought of that one. I have been looking around the house for stuff to cut apart and found nothing yet. Did you put it on both the inside and the outside?
