Thanks Steelworker. Greatly appreciated. Too many forget that it was a mere generation ago, that the fate of the entire world hung in the balance, it's ultimate direction decided by the veracity of very young men of many nationalities. We all owe them a debt.

If you have an hour to spare, this is a good bit of colour film showing life on the ground and combat footage too. Narrated by 1st Lieutenant (later Captain) Clark Gable, who flew 5 missions with 351BG as an observer to complete this film. This unit was stationed at RAF Polebrook, Northamptonshire.

James Stewart and Walter Matthau both served at Old Buckenham - another 8th Air Force base that's maybe 20 miles from where I live.

This is great, thanks for sharing!

Brad and I visited the 8th AF museum in Savannaha GA in 2012. Here is a link to the photos I took

Thanks Parrothead. Great thread and pics. The P51 replica in one of your pictures is in the colours of the Blue Noses from Bodney Airfield.

I love the pics of that hotel you stayed in. What an art deco gem.

Default Snetterton Heath

Home of the 96th Bombardment Group.

Without doubt the most spectacular of the local monuments to the 8th.

After the war, Snetterton was used for motor racing, and still is my local race circuit. Until very recently, it was an only very slightly modified flat-out blast around the A of the original airfield. It was, and possibly still is, the second fastest circuit in the UK after Thruxton, but a twisty infield section was added a few years ago which makes it more interesting to ride.

Steelworker are you located anywhere near Podington? This is near Wellingborough. My father flew B-17's from that field in 1944. 92nd BG, 327th BS. Sadly he passed away in 1978. It would be wonderful if you are near and could photograph this field. My father's fortress was shot down in July of 1944 on a mission over a BMW engine factory in Munich. They crash landed in the Bavarian Alps 1 km from Mittenwald, Germany. He spent the duration of the war on the Baltic Sea in Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Germany and was liberated by the Russian army May of 1945.

The internet is an amazing tool, through it I have corresponded with an eyewitness to the crash who was a 14 year old boy at the time. I have also found two photographs of my father while in Stalag Luft 1. Remarkable!

I think your plan to visit and photograph as many of these locations as possible is great and will be a gift to those men who fought and should not be forgotten. I applaud your effort.
