Default Big Ugly, my Ulythang

I've been meaning to post this, but I've been busy and kept forgetting. Here is the evolution of Big Ugly, my 2006 Ulysses.

Here it is when I first bought it from Dan

I was never a big fan of the Barricade Orange, so I picked up a hero Blue airbox cover and flyscreen, as well as a factory low seat, which was solid black.

Some of my favorite Rocky Mountains riding pics

Shortly after I got it, we put it on the dyno at NRHS. In stock form, it put down 75.92 RWHP. That wasn't gonna cut it. I stage II'd the heads, ported the manifold, added an NRHS 1250 kit with 10* dome pistons, and NRHS CAT3 cams. With this setup, it put down 100.5 RWHP. A couple months later, I switched from 1.840" intake valves to 1.900" intake valves, new intake valve seats (mine were disintegrating), shorter pushrods, and decked the heads a bit more (150 PSI ccp), and netted 103.51 RWHP.

I then got creative with some paint, and elaborated the new color scheme.

Then I went for a little sportier look, ditching the top bag, switching to an XT rear shock, raising the forks in the trees, and adding a FatBar conversion.

A few months ago, I decided to go a bit bigger even still. I bought and worked a different set of XB heads, but this time with welded, raised intake ports (flipped flanges, clearancing done to accommodate), 1.900” intake and 1.630” exhaust valves, beehive springs, and 67cc chambers set up for a stock style flat squish band. Then I used an NRHS 1250 kit with XB9 style pistons (high center dome for compression) and NRHS CAT4 cams, which I had to make my own timing marks and timing cup notch to utilize in the XB, since the cams are positioned backwards relative to an XL. This setup should be just over 200 PSI ccp, but I haven’t yet measured. I haven’t finished breaking it in yet either, but I expect it to put down good numbers . Mind you I’m still using the stock exhaust!

Last month I built brackets and mounted a KTM Duke II headlight on the front, as well as a Flexi-Glass front fender, to really change things up, as well as switched to a Kick Ash air box cover, radial front master cylinder, ASV shorty levers, and a few other things. But now it’s getting almost completely torn down for more substantial changes, as well as soon a new color palette.

That pretty much catches us up to speed .

Surprise us, but we already know it won't be Barricade Orange. I want to see how your wheels end up!

You have that stutter exhaust sound around 2400 rpm?

That stutter was partially because of an improper tune. I borrowed a friend's stainless Drummer exhaust, rode with it a few days and built a tune from the data logs, making it better each time, and then ran it on the dyno back to back with both mufflers. Unfortunately I couldn't find my stock exhaust tune somehow, so I used the Drummer tune. The stock exhaust has the valve that opens and closes at different RPM, whereas the Drummer does not. The Drummer topped at 103.50, and the stock exhaust at 103.51. Other than that stumble, they were within margin of error. Needless to say, since I don't care to only increase sound, I haven't been in any rush to replace the stock muffler.

Today I went deep. I made due with the tools I have, including thus very handy breaker bar.

I don't think this is supposed to be like this...

The plan is to replace the steering head bearings, rear isolator, swingarm bearings, a few other odds and ends, replace my shock and forks with the Lightning Long pieces I have (3" shorter than before, 4" shorter than stock X height), and powder coat several pieces while I have them off. Maybe even throw some paint on the swingarm and frame as well, we'll see.
