Thanks Mike and Oldboy, for the really solid advice.
I think maybe stay in the states and do a Baja run. as you said, still enjoy the locals and the scenery.
I know its corny, but a lot of what an Aussie thinks Mexico looks like is Baja, from the movies, and that road looks great.
Just to be clear, that's the Baja 1000? Starts 16th Nov, so we'd be well gone by then.
Thanks again for taking the time to recommend.

Yes the 1000. You’ll be there at a good time. There will be just a handful of racers there, but no too many. Rooms will be available and there will be lots of “freindlies “around with trailers to offer assistance if needed.

Many Hollywood westerns were filmed near Durango, Mexico. Imo, Durango doesn't look that much different from West Texas. I really like the Big Bend area of Texas, going west from Del Rio. Langtry, a bit further west of Del Rio, still has the feel of the 'old west'. Waco is home to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.

Yes! I was looking at Big Bend national park. We can follow the Rio
Grand. My mate wants to see Texas, I'd like to go back to AZ and NM.
I think if we wanted some mountains we'd have to go a bit north to Sierra Nevadas yes? It'll be a bit flat along the Mexican border?

Big Bend Natioal Park has a lot to offer. High desert, Santa Elena Canyon (on the Rio Grande), the Chisos Mountain Range, and more. There is also a Big Bend State Park. Both have great camping and full amenities.

What time of year would be best?
Starting in Charlotte NC, and heading west, following Rio Grande , then down Baja?

I think Mikes plan is great!
Thinking of moving the date forward now, coz I'm getting excited!
Basically, start Charlotte, head to Savannah , and Deep South all along.
We are both jazz musos and will have instruments, and I have friends in NOLA. And be good to go to Austin.
Maybe Feb/March?

FYI the dates for all the Baja races tis year.

34th SCORE San Felipe 250, March 25-29, San Felipe, Mexico
52nd SCORE Baja 500, June 3-7, Ensenada, Mexico
2nd SCORE Baja 400, Sept. 16-20, Ensenada, Mexico
53rd SCORE Baja 1000, Nov.19-24, Ensenada to La Paz, Mexico

You wont have any issues with the March dates during the San Felipe event, that is east side (Sea of Cortez). I would try to avoid the summer months (June, July and Aug) just for the simple fact it will be hot.The rest of the months should be great weather for riding, warm days and cool eves.

I just returned from Austin on Fri, one of my favorite parts of Texas.

You can enter any city and look at the long term forecast up to a month ahead on accuweather.com. This is the site I used on my Canada trip last September and it was respectably accurate. Be aware, humidity varies a LOT across the U.S. and can make it feel much warmer or much cooler than the ambient temperature.

Just enter the city and select month from
"Now" "Radar" "MinuteCast" "Hourly" "Daily" "Month"

Charlotte, NC

New Orleans, LA

Austin, TX
