Default T minus one week (give or take) from the IBR - Fortune Favors the Bold!

Sorry for the lack up updates, I was working in my hotel Monday - Wednesday and then in relax mode Thursday and Friday

I left home Friday night after work and rode about 230 miles to Somerset PA. Uneventful ride. Saturday I was up around 6 and out the door at 7am. Since I was planning on a 1,000 mile ride in less than 24 hours I decided to document it as a SS1K which meant I needed start and end fuel receipts plus one every 350 miles. It was rather cool when I left and had my heated jacket liner on. Batteries were dead in the controller so it only put out about 1/3 the heat it normally does. I could have bypassed the controller for full heat but it wasn't needed. Had an uneventful ride with no stops until I got southwest of Chicago. There I ran into some thunderstorms and it was frustrating since I could see clear blue sky about 20 miles to my south. Finally fought through them and the sky cleared.

I decided to make a quick stop for a photo of the sunset. I just missed the actual sunset as there was no clear view of it due to trees. But I did catch a pretty good photo

Sunset on I-80 near Adair IA

I ended my ride in Lincoln NE with about 1025 miles ridden in 18 hours

Sunday morning I was out around 7am again and my first stop was a Tour of Honor memorial about 15 minutes from my hotel. As I pulled out of my hotel I became aware of my first issue, no rear brakes!!! I am cursed, whenever I go near UT or WY I lose my rear brakes. I have been out that way every year since 2015 with the exception of 2020, and each year I had to swing by Decman's place in Wyoming to get them fixed. Really??? I checked the route to see what adding him into my day would do and it added another 3-4 hours to my ride, something I could not afford since I had to work on Monday. I decided to blead them myself and if that didn't work then make the 5 hour run from Salt Lake City to his place in WY. I left the parking lot and in a few minutes I swung into a nice park that had a few memorials in it. I checked a few out put only took photos of the ones I needed

9-11 Memorial

Gold Star Memorial

From there is was a straight shot staying on I-80. Around noon I was tired, falling asleep, and felt horrible. I thought this was a bad omen, I must be in worse shape than I thought, so much for being competitive this time. I happened to changes screens on the GPS looking for food and I saw the temp, 102 degrees!! That explains it, I had one bottle of water since leaving my hotel and had not stopped to use the bathroom yet. Dehydration. I found a gas station, grabbed some sugarless Gatorade and a sandwich, and 15 minutes latter felt a little better.
As I was leaving I became aware of my next issue, my right grip twisted but the bike didn't go faster. The grip had come loose from the throttle tube. Really??? I decided to deal with it later and kept riding. I kept feeling better as I rode on and continued to drink fluids.

The last issue was my 1 gallon Yeti Water Jug. I had mounted it to my bike but never tested it. I realized I needed a vent hole so I drilled one in the cap (rubber stopper is what I was using). I had put a vent hole in the cap but in doing so had nicked the "straw" inside. Ever try drinking from a cracked straw? That is what it was like. Again, something to deal with in Salt Lake City.

I rode on and at one point I just had to stop for a photo. Don't recall where it was in the day. But this is what I was seeing as I rode. And they say you cannot see anything good on an Interstate ...

Elk Mountain WY on I-80

I had one more Tour of Honor stop in Green River WY, so I got off I-80 for a quick photo for another Tour of Honor Memorial around 4pm

I ended the day in Draper UT, just south of Salt Lake City with 900 miles for the day and around 2150 since leaving home Friday evening. I spent the next three days working and nights fixing my bike.

First I had to bleed the rear brakes. I rode to the Harley dealer and grabbed two bottles of DOT 5 brake fluid. Once back to my hotel I had them bled in 15 minutes and used a fraction of one bottle.

Next I had to re-glue my right grip since it had come off the throttle tube. A quick call to my mechanic and he confirmed my first thought, gel super glue. I liberally spread it on the grip and twisted it as I put it on being sure to leave the worn side up so it matched the left grip. 24 hours later after baking in the sun it was good and tight.

Lastly I had to fix my water jug. This would be critical since every day out here was over 100 degrees. I bought some silicone glue and after some glueing and carving with my knife I had it working. I do need a bigger vent but I can get water through the drinking tube so it will have to do.

View from my hotel in Draper UT

On Wednesday after I got done working I packed up and relocated to the host hotel in Provo. Along the way I stopped at a Harley Dealer and they had some cool old bikes. Sadly, very little new stuff. They did have a Pan America but it was sold.

1911 Harley, similar to my Great Grandfathers

Harley Topper

Servi Car, I love these and some day I will have one

I had a short ride to my hotel from there but first one more Tour of Honor stop

After that I checked in. Great view from the hotel

Standing in front of parking garage

Center Street just around the corner

I ran into the Rally Master who called me over (never a good thing) who told me I was missing paperwork which I knew I had mailed. She also informed me that I had never sent in my tracking link (I had). No big deal, easily fixed. I got the forms from her and filled out what I could, I'd get the one release notarized in the morning. I checked my phone and saw I had emailed the link, so I forwarded it to her and to the person monitoring us. With that, I hung out with some friends and went to bed.

Thursday I awoke and headed down to breakfast and I could not believe my eyes

A breakfast buffet, something I had not seen since March 2020, over 14 months ago. Bacon!!!!

I took care of my paperwork, confirmed my tracking link was working, and then I was free for a few days. Thursday and Friday were spent hanging with friends.

Saturday is when it gets real. First we come down and get our first glimpse of the theme of the rally with the rally poster

While one can only read so much into the poster, it is likely the theme is transportation. Everyone was buzzing about what we will have to do, what we will see, etc.

After breakfast we get our packets and start the registration process. We have waivers, video waivers, camera card check, emergency contact form check, odometer check, and technical inspection. Tech inspection is simply ensuring our aux fuel tanks are secure, fuel capacity is under 11.5 gallons, VIN on bike, insurance, and registration all match, and if not running stock exhaust that we meet sound requirements.

I got done around noon and not it's time to wait. At this point I just want to go. We had a nice dinner with everyone, the last chance to relax before we start getting into rally mode.

Sunday (today) we have a rider meeting at 2pm, a group photo for anyone in Tour of Honor at 4pm, and then the banquet at 6pm. The banquet is where we get the rally book and our flags

Every year this is a Hopeless Class entry or two and this year was no exception. One was a friend of mine who I had sold a parts bike and titled from for a 1975 Suzuki GT550. He got the bike running and put about 1000 miles on it, but burnt a hole in a piston due to an intake manifold leak. The president of the IBA had called him and told him to give up and take his Vstrom, so he did. He was going to ride his 75 GT750, but changed his mind. The second is riding a KTM 2 stroke dirtbike. I forget the model but it is in the daily report

We were all wondering about the start. Since we were in a parking garage we were concerned about the tight turns and possibility of cars backing out as we leave. Needless to say, our fears are not warranted as these guys are professionals. They had arranged with the town to block off the street for us and to have an escort out to I_15

And so there is where I stand, a little past noon Mountain time sitting in my hotel. I need to finish packing up, get some food, and have some time to speak with friends who came out to the start. Thanks for reading and I will gladly accept any well wishes, prayers for a safe journey, etc. I feel that is what keeps me going as I still cannot believe I am able to hang with some of these riders and put on the amount of miles I do in such a short period of time.

Sadly, I cannot share my tracking link publicly, however Shanneba has graciously agreed to post a high lever daily update each day that will give an overview of what and how I am doing.

I am signing off now and will not likely be back on until I finish on Friday July 1st.

PS: You may notice my slogan in the title - Fortune Favors the Bold - that is how i am attacking this rally, in an attempt to finish as high as I possibly can.

The rider list has been posted along with today's activities.
A few more photos have been added to the Check-in Photos link,.

Riders should be planning their route, bonus locations and arrival just north of Indianapolis on Thursday the 24th. I think check in starts around 4pm with penalty time starting around 8 PM.

Today is THE Day, start of the 2021 Iron Butt Rally.

The theme of the rally is “Miles of Progress” and the intent is to find bonuses with historical significance in innovation and progress for the human condition.

I saw a video posted with pictures from past IBRs.

Rally Time 2021

It looks like the "official" 2021 IBR site is live-
http://ibr.wvi.com/

Hopefully later today the Spotwalla IBR tracking page will be available,
you can't identify the individual riders but you can see where they are headed.
