Ah, I just watched the vid and realized the question Brian was asking me was if "Boomer" was my dog, that my wife says his name at the beginning. It is more an avatar of my attitude when I am in city traffic. Sometimes, that is what I feel like when I get cut off or am being tailgated by cagers. Sorry, bald moment!

I'm not surprised it didn't make any sense-you were posting the vid to demonstrate the horn not your dog!

It sounds like the "chrome" Stebel isn't worth the extra money, so I think that the plain one will be the one I go with. I like the looks of the all black. Is there a special paint that you used?

First,I masked it off with masking tape, then scuffed it with scotchbrite and wiped clean with alcohol. Primered it with a chromate primer and then shot a coat of polyurethane low gloss black on it. Easy enough.

hi
Just starting to research horns and understanding relays. I know this is years old but I had to comment this is the best explanation of a "relay" I have found! I have been reading and searching to understand the relay and this was perfect, thanks!

Quote:

Without using a relay, all that current is going through your handlebar switch-most likely more amperage than it was designed to handle. While it will work, it is not uncommon for such a load to prematurely burn out the switch (also the wire going to and from the switch isn't large enough to carry the full current that the horn(s) were designed for(not talking about the 'meep-meep' horn). By using a relay, the handlebar switch only handles the low current involved in activating the relay...the big load is handled by the relay itself (the typical Bosch style relay is rated from between 25-30 amps). Another benefit from using the relay is that the horns may actually perform better by getting the current that they need to reach their full potential volume.

Not to mention that an internal melt-down of a wiring harness is enough to ruin your day

I'm a little late to the dance on this, but I just installed a stebel on my 2010 iron. Thank you guys for all the information. I did a simple function over form install and mounted it
on the right side fender strut by the rear taillight with a very simple homemade bracket. Very loud and positioned to blare at the idiots on the right floating into my lane.

Update: Had to use the horn out of defense mood, worked great, stopped the old coot from taking me out. We were side by side, he is looking in his mirror but not me right beside him. The horns woke him up real quick.

Glad worked! I didn't read the whole thread so this may have been mentioned before.

These horns are also marketed as the Wolo Bad Boy. If you search around you can get the chrome version for around 40 bucks.

Kuryaykn also makes a chrome cover for them.
