Default There are many ways to search the XLForum

THIS FORUM IS FREAKIN' HUGE!!!

I thought I'd post this and maybe it'll help some when searching the forum.
See example pics below.

The subject of how to search the forum has come up from time to time and I feel for those that need the information but can't find it.
Of course, my first response would be to point one to the Sportsterpedia if I know the subject is there yet.
But subjects there are put there after we have searched the forum and found things to add.
I usually spend many hours a day researching the forum and have a nack for either finding things or wasting a day looking.
So I figured I'd try and share some of what I've found on ways to search the forum.
I'm sure there is a whole bunch of different ways I haven't run across yet but these usually work for me.
It also depends on how much time you have, using the right key words when searching and maybe your internet settings and provider etc.....
I'm sure I've left out things.
Be sure to check the forum "HOW TO" section.
Here's the link: http://xlforum.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16

When you do a search from the top of the page, it gives you the most recent relative results.
Well, some should be relevent anyway.
When the bits hits the bytes and the program reprograms itself, you might get a post that reads "give me a break" when searching "brakes".
Or you get something on handlebars when searching transmissions.
But it still works.
A search for "1986" will work sometimes. "86-90" or other years. Slang words sometimes (like foo-foo).
Jibberish even works sometimes..

When using the Google search at the bottom of the page, chances are you'll get more older results than the search at the top of the page.
You don't usually have to be signed in to use it.
It seems to search thread titles more than posts though. But it also picks up posts.

Any search you do, the results that are most relevant come up first and you'll notice subsequently when the results start drifting.
But that happens on any browser search.
You can only search X amount of times there without being signed in or you'll get a pop-up asking you sign in or to join or something.
I didn't do that. It's part of the deal. I don't know the magic number of searches when this will happen.
But I search offline in several different ways (hope that is OK).

When searching from your internet browser, type what you are searching for followed by the coding in the pic below;
Click on "All" and it's kind of like using the Google search at the bottom of the page, only different results and usually older threads/posts.
Click on "Image" and you'll see lots of pics from the XLF (as long as the subject you search has been picked up and archived on the net.
Else it'll show mostly pics of other sites.
Some browsers will not show pics but they will show the site without pics.
Some won't work at all unless you use the right browser or settings.
I don't allow cookies on most sites other than the XLF or Sportsterpedia so that is also a show stopper on some sites.

I don't know anything about searching from a phone. I have a landline (yes they do exist) and that's all.

Try different keywords.
Any way you search, try using different keywords, or even better, part numbers.
Brakes, wheels, spokes etc may all lead to discussions on forks... and sometimes oil choice.
Funny thing is searching XLF pics on the net.
I can search several keywords around carbs and end up with many pics of fenders.
But if I search for fenders, I may never see that one pic that showed up when searching carbs.
So it's a crap shoot sometimes. That's where the Sportsterpedia comes in handy.
It's basically a compilation of the forum (been at it over 5 years and I haven't found everything on the forum)

Simple Search (top of page):

Advance Search (top of page):

Google Search (bottom of page):

Search the Forum from the Internet:

Default Search the Sportsterpedia

The Sportsterpedia is a living document, is part of the XLForum and is being updated regularly so if you don't find what your looking for now, check back later.

You can use the search feature on the upper left portion of the page:
Search a part, part number or phrase from the search box on the menu to the left of the page for information and technical information.
You can also search the pedia from the home page in the different links of catagories.
The pedia isn't subjective to dates of posts but rather content so it works really good.

Thanks for the info.

I’m usually frustrated with the top of the page search. If I can remember where I saw something before (or who posted), the advanced search is helpful. Ill have to try the advanced some more.

I find the best results with the google at the bottom of the page or a browser search. Adjusting keyword(s) helps a lot.

The google search often provides archive links that are not so great to read. Clicking full version restores the thread

Yes, changing keywords around is helpful sometimes.

Recently I was looking for pics of primary/transmission vents.
I found a few but was looking for certain year models as the fittings changed over the years.
It finally occurred to me (since it is below the starter) to search "starter" instead.
Then whalla, I found the pic of the fitting I was looking for below a starter someone was working on.
I found a few of them also by searching "engine".
Just got to get creative sometimes.
Build threads have a lot of good information in them but they can be time consuming to read thru if you are looking for one thing.
It doesn't seem like the search engine does as good a job picking up words in build threads although results from them do show up from time to time.

Since the search engines do a better job at picking up thread titles, it makes naming threads specifically more important.
Titling a thread "1977 brake bleeder" will result in a faster search hit later than "It broke, what now?".
While "It broke, what now?" may get people interested to read it right now, some won't bother to read it not knowing the subject matter.
But later on, it may be harder for someone else to find that needs the information.

I don't know if it's sticky worthy or not but that was my thinking too about pointing new members to it.
I still haven't found everything on this forum.
I wouldn't expect new guys to be able to use it to the fullest possible without a little help.
