Those last 6 numbers are the Serial Number
According to this PDF from MMI,

The first 3 numbers are the Julian Calendar day that the crankcase was made (044)
A number 002 would indicate January 2, where 365 would indicate December 31 of a non "leap-year" year.
The last 3 numbers are the sequential number on the assembly line (088).
The first engine of the day would be 001 where 045 would be the 45th of the day.
The sequential number will generally be below 250.
So if I'm reading this right...
044088 would be built on Julian Calendar day (044) and it was number (088) off the line that day.
Which makes it fall within the realm of possiblity without red flags.
