Default Bank Angle Sensor bypass

H-D added the BAS to kill the engine when the bike is laid on its side. That function does not always work (personal experience on a new 2003 XLH883) and sensor failure will inhibit the engine from starting. The BAS on rigid models is under the triangular plate, to the rear of the battery.

To bypass a failed BAS (or to simplify wiring), the BAS can be easily bypassed. My experience is with rigid mount EVOs, but the principle is the same for rubber mounts. H-D uses a fail-safe sensor principle: A sensor must close to ground. For example, the neutral safety switch completes a circuit to ground, when the trans is in neutral. Same with the clutch switch, when the lever is pulled. This is opposite brake light switch operation, which switches 12 VDC from the accessory switch (orange/white) to the brake light (red/yellow) switch leg.

On my 1200 Sport (2002 1200S domestic and international main harness page 5-29), the BAS has three wires and receives power from the gray wire (from the ignition fuse) which also powers the “engine stop/run switch”. If removing the sensor, that 12 VDC wire will need to be capped. Connecting the light green/gray wire (from the module) to ground, via the black wire, will provide run mode.

Great info, any chance of posting a pic for those without the service manual?

I'm wondering if that's what is wrong with my 2002 Hugger. No start no way.... was waiting for delivery on new plugs & HT leads... which are a bit tired... but time to go investigate BAS methinks!

I'm seeing three wires on my Hugger 883 2002 wiring diagram:
Black,
Green,
Grey.

I think you are saying cap the grey, then join / connect the green to black... is that the deal?
