Mike1nw is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Oil amount

2007 883

I just changed the oil (just bought the bike). Put in 3 qts. It's just over the top of the dipstick.
The OM sez 3.6 qts. - a couple ounces for the filter.

What is wrong here?

What does 'just over the top of the dipstick mean.. as in over the top line on the dipstick?
Did you ride the bike for 15-20 min or so before checking / adding oil?
Is it just over the dipstick when the engine is hot or cold?

3.6 is apparently what they take when the engine is completely dry,
usually an oil and filter change will take about 2.8 ltrs.
Just drain some out.
