My 1980 had apes when I bought it, never ridden a bike with them before but they are not terrible. That's not to say they are all that good either but I've grown accustomed to them. That being said when I cobble together some mid-peg controls I am going to flat bars ASAFP.

I think it is all personal preference regarding riding position. I have tried many different bars but always come back to apes. 12-16" max. I think the really tall ones look kinda silly. Once your hands are above your shoulders, I think your control of the bike becomes compromised. Of course, this is all just my personal opinion.

I have recently modified my take on them.
If I were in the right state of mind they could be fun.
I just grew up on dirtbikes and was always concerned about controlling the bike.
But then there are guys who do fine with apes
I have always been radiator-phobic.
Revising that too. I will never own one, but they do help a motor.
Although I will be air-cooled for the ten or so I have left

This one might bear a look. Two hours away
"got s&s stuff inside the motor" at least he didn't say "gots"
I could sell the forward stuff. Not my liking
