OK, I have a 2006 883R HDI which came stock with TSSM and siren and when I have had a fail to start in cold weather, battery on its way out, it does not behave like yours so I would say it is not normal behaviour so possibly the TSSM is faulty or incompatible. The backup battery is in the siren so I don't think it affects the TSSM.

I only know that if you disconnect the battery the alarm will sound. So the alarm (TSSM) must get it's power from somewhere I guess? Is there a loose battery connection perhaps?

Yea i think that's triggered in the siren itself, not the tssm

The TSM/TSSM modules share a password with the ECM on fuel injected bikes (and ICM's on early rubber mount bikes). When replacing an ECM/ICM or TSSM, you must go through a password learn procedure. If the procedure is not followed, the engine will start and run for a few seconds, and then stall. This will typically throw a P1009 diagnostic code.

HAVE YOU CHECKED FOR DIAGNOSTIC CODES?

You may need to go thru the Password Learn Procedure...

Here's the Sportsterpedia Link to that procedure:

Here’s the process that finally worked for me. The difference being that I has to turn the bike on-off-on-off-on-off-on, hit the left turn signal twice, then attempt to start. Then I follow the 3 10 minute procedures. Worked like a charm. Shoutout to this guy

On the hard starting. There is a lot on here about checking the battery, the connections and cables. Two problems I had, the negative cable goes from battery to a bolt in the case and that bolt had loosened up so the connection was intermittent. I use a tender-not charger at all times now. Check the cables every once and the connections. I have had zero problems.

Let me know if you have any questions or stuff you need to troubleshoot. Mine is an 05 as well, so we'll have pretty much the same setup
