Well its a matter of what you like and makes you happy in the end. True that the original tank keeps the Sportster look but you need a lot of gas stations along the way on a long trip. My brother rode his from Seattle Washington to Maine, and from Seattle Washington to Cape Canaveral Florida. He said the small tank was a pain in the ass. Other than that the bike ran great. I have fat bob tank on mine, that's the way I bought it. Someday I may go back to the original. But this was the previous owners personality and what he likes, it also caught my eye as it is different for a Sportster.

Besides the range you get,

The smaller tank makes the motor look bigger. So if you want to accentuate the chrome you put on the motor go with the smaller tank.

The larger tank gives you more space to show off a custom paint job, so if you are going with some fancy paint job the larger tank will show it off better.

Get 'em both and paint them identical. Peanut for your daily daily and the king for the long haul.

The standard tank in photo 2 looks awful if there is a gap between it and the seat - the way it stands above the frame backbone is just wrong, tank 1 if you can stand the petrol stops or a propper king sporty tank.
