PS, REALLY, please see Parrothead if you want the exact opposite anecdote.

And ask for help around here if you want to fix your bike, it's obviously broken.

As for the delusions regarding the BMW dealer network I recommend someone professional, I would suggest a psychiatrist over a psychologist because they may need to prescribe medication too.

No seriously ok, I'm coming on a little hard, but that's only cause I've ridden EU brand bikes (including BMWs) about as long as I've been riding Harleys (meaning decades).

But if Chris can run/finish multiple IBR rallies and my wife can tour thousands of miles at a time on a Sporty I'm sure you're the odd man out.

Anyway good luck with that purple sky.

Between independent shops and dealers (who I avoid since I don't need their services) the US is saturated with HD support and no other aftermarket is remotely close to matching HDs accumulation of manufacturers. I've had Airheads (utterly reliable, light and simple but I sold them because I wanted more power).and worked on Oilheads but the BMW aftermarket is microscopic compared to HD. You can build a complete, higher performance HD clone using zero MoCo parts. Try that with any other large displacement machine. The BMOWOA are a fine group for those wanting formal owners associations. i don't need that either but not everyone's a mechanic. I'm a multibrand mech and owe no loyalty to any brand. My HDs, Triumphs, Nortons and Honda don't get jealous of each other.

31 MPG on a 1200 means something is phuktup. BMWs are of course far better at touring than a Sporty and have much smoother engines, but HD has the touring market covered with other machines.

Used (post-Airhead) BMWs can be found dirt cheap for those wanting to sample one. Bikes don't get jealous of each other so why not pig out?

Is it possible his Sportster just doesn't like him? If I ride 60-65mph on the long scenic? 2 lanes we have here in my state, I'm looking at 58-62 mpg. Interstates, I usually get 52-58 mpg. Before I retired I lived 8-9 miles from work, with 7 miles of interstate and for 2 summers in a row, 50 mpg. {Summer in North Dakota - When it stops snowing to when it starts snowing}. When I ran Ironheads, mileage was similar except in the city 27-32 mpg. Mine, usually, is never below 42 mpg around town.
Bone and Farmall are right, something is amiss if you are getting less than 40 mpg.

My 1200 gets 52 mpg at a steady 60 mph. That's just a bit more than my old Honda 350 got. I trust my 1200. Doesn't mean a BMW is junk.

Just for the record; my Roadster has been in all 48 contiguous states and up into Canada. It has over 100,000 miles on the odometer and gets roughly 44 MPG running between 70 - 80 MPH on the highway.

While there are many things that BMWs do well at (What would effete snobs ride without them?), my Roadster is one of the most satisfying motorcycles I've owned in over 50 years and almost a million miles of riding.

Bone is right.

Filled my 4.5 tank, today. Exactly 100 miles and used 2.03 gals. 75 miles on a 4 lane state highway.
