The 4th gear whine is the only thing that's quieter on my '05 than my '03. It is normal.

For 2005 and earlier 5 speeds:

I wonder if the 4th gear noise is more noticeable because of where 4th gear is in the transmission? The gears are installed like this:
front tire
primary case 4 1 3 2 5 belt sprocket
rear tire
You're moving along at a pretty good clip, so the gears are really slinging around, and the 4th gear is closest to the primary side, and the primary case acts as a big drum, and the normal gear noise resonates. When you drop it into 5th, the 5th gear is locked to the mainshaft and it's direct drive, 1:1, and the noise all goes away.

3rd gear on Big Twins with straight cut gears is similarly loud, because 3rd gear is in the middle of the shaft, where it gets the most deflection, and therefore most noise. 3rd is probably not as noisy on an XL because the shafts are not as long as the Big Twin.

That's my theory and I'm stickin to it.

BTW, in case this makes no sense, the noise in 4th gear is normal. Just ride it.

Thought of one more thing. If you're lugging it, i.e. not revving it out enough, it will be noisier than if you keep the RPMs up.

AND THE ANSWER IS!
The reason 4th is so loud is that it is the only gear that spins every gear
on both the main shaft and the counter shaft. No other gear spins'em all.
If you look in the field manual under transmission, they show you with color
coding which gears are engaged in each of the five speeds.

Question Transmission whine

My '07 1200R has a high pitched "yowl" as opposed to a "whine" that's especially noticeable if you're riding next to a wall. I can't hear it on the open road, but it is present if I'm next to a flat walled cage. Normal or not normal? Sorry Howie.

Normal...Walls, tunnels, ETC. all exaggerate sounds. Don't pay any attention.
