I went back and reviewed the discussion here and see that this is the current state of affairs......
'Clutch lever now works but fails to disengage the clutch.'
Is that the current situation?

If it is, then just do this.......
Start the bike up and let the engine warm up for a minute.
Then roll the bike down the driveway and jump aboard.
While the bike is still rolling forward pull in the clutch lever and put it in first gear.
Ride it around the block and shift through the gears a few times while you are making the block.
Back at the house........ Is it better now?

Glad to hear you have it running.
I have been at this for many, many years and have come to realize not everyone has been used to working on an old Sportster
After we reached a dead end on the adjustment procedure I thought...... 'This fellow must not know what to expect from a Sportster clutch.'
You are not the first person to expect a Sporty clutch to smoothly and completely disengage. They do not work that way and when brand new did not work that way either.
Also, most people do not know how to do the adjustment properly either.
They just start turning the cable adjuster to fix slack in the cable. That is not the way you do it on a Sporty. On a Honda maybe, but not an ironhead.
