Ironhead 1979 1000 kick compression at very bottom?

I'm just finishing up replacing the transmission on my 1979 1000xlh Kickstart only. I have very little to do. I was putting back on the kick pedal assembly only to realize I'm only receiving push back at the very bottom of the kick motion (6 o clock rather than 9 o clock) my friend said that it had to do with the spring rite in back of the kick shaft (that the pedal assembly bolts too). But, even with the spring off... I still only get that compression feel at the very bottom when kicking. Do I have to go all the way back to behind the clutch basket, where the kick sprocket is, turn the shaft 90 degrees then, reassemble everything again? Or, is it a much easier (I pray) task?

If that is the case, and I would have to go all the way back.. can I just drill a hole in the other side of the shaft (90 degrees from current hole that pedal assembly bolts in) and fix the pedal there so that, compression will again start at 9 0 clock? Or... is that shaft set and need to be at a certain place in reference to something that it may incounter on the inside of the case. If it's just a simple repositioning of the shafts hole to turn and fix the pedal assembly... no problem. But, if it ABSOLUTELY needs to be turned because of what it contacts inside the case then, I will go all the way back. To any answers given,.. please, please be certain.. I don't want to kick the pedal to start and unknowingly break a tooth of a gear or something horrible. I appreciate all the help..as always!

A Service Manual that can be had used on eBay can clear up many Questions, to be involved with these Motorcycles the Service Manual and the Parts Books are Invaluable Tools, I am aware this reply is not what you are looking for

I have both harley's parts catalog *79-*85 and clymer service manual. Neither is help in this matter.. I need one of the pros who have first-hand been inside a 1979 and can tell me, if I reposition the kick pedal assembly (on the shaft) back 90 degrees, does the actual shaft (have to) be in a certain position inside the cranckase.. will it break something if I just change the position (or the side) that the hole is on the kick shaft. From what I can tell, it doesn't matter but, I have not seen what is between the two outsides of the case.. I don't know (for sure) what the shaft contacts inside the crancase and I need to have a definite answer.

sounds like the kick shaft was installed incorrectly, you'll need to remove clutch hub to remedy this.

No short cuts to FIXING RIGHT! Ya done messed up but it ain't all that bad. Pull the clutch shell off to get access to the Starter Crank Gear. The slot on the transmission side rides in the Starter Crank Gear Stop. What I do is hook a bungee chord to the kicker arm and hook it to the seat mount. Now index the Crank Starter gear and snug the nut down. Slip the bushing, spring, gear and shell on. Remove bungee and test the kicker.

I can't cut a slot in the kicker shaft, reposition the kicker arm assembly back 90 degrees and tighten? If I do decide to do it that way,. Will it hurt anything?

Shaft must be indexed correctly and you have it very wrong.
