Battery Tender offers a USB converter that plugs in to their pigtail. I have used one with my iPhone 5 reliably. Very handy.

I use a single 12volt lighter socket on several bikes including a style that clamps on your handlebars. On the bikes with the full fairings though, I use a car style, with 2 lighter sockets and 2 USB ports. Even the one that clamps to the bars has a USB (and the lighter socket). I use them for my GPS, charging the ereader and or cell phone. One bike is switched with the key but the rest are wired (and fused) directly to the battery. A laptop CAN suck the battery down, but a phone, tablet, ereader is not a problem. If you have a waterproof tankbag, even better.

That's what I use. Leave my phone in a tank bag plugged in whIle I ride.

I have used a lighter socket pluged into the battery tender plug . Just sure be the lighter socket is hooked up with the ground right . I have used this set up for 10 years without a problem .

This will charge about 3 or 4 times.
Plug it in to fully charge and the splat keeps it topped up. Also has a good light as a backup/emergency light

Harley sell a ՍSB cοnnector that you can wire in to the bike. I'd get that. I might get one anyway, in case I need to charge the phone up while on a long ride.

X2, Delran makes a USB adapter that plugs into the tender lead. Really easy

Or, just search eBay or amazon for “motorcycle USB charger” , you’ll find many devices for sale in the $10 range. I have a couple with USB and lighter plug socket. It has a flip over cover, a switch and an LED indicator. It clamps to the handlebar.

Some of them have a voltmeter built in.
