Default Dip-stick temp gage - any alternatives?

Hey,

guess it's the time to get a temp gage.

I talked with my friend who runs a service about it, and what he told me was that dip-stick gages are not the best solution due to their poor reaction time for temp. changes.

Do you know of any alternative products? where elsewhere can they be installed?

Thanks

I'd question your buddy's answer personally.

It's rare that you would NEED anything more than that on a Harley.

I have no problems with the reaction time of my dipstick gauge. The only issue is the pain I'm in trying to read the thing while on the bike. Fugettabout tryin' to read it while rolling down the street.

I put a mark at 200 with a magic marker and turn it upside-down so I can glance at it when stopped at a light or sign.
Works for me.

You can also use a large meat thermometer and just stick it into the oil bag for spot checks.

I put mine on upside down, with 200 degrees about the 6:00 position then at a stop light/sign I can glance down and see the temp and know without reading anything am I close to 200 over or under.

You could always try a digital tansmission oil temp guage for race cars and plumb it into your return line to the oil tank.
Reaction time should be spot on.

This will probably be one of my winter projects.
I just hope I can find a suitable guage cup that fits it.
The replacement sender says it even comes with a T fitting.

The "MM2S: Gauge, Temperature Sensing, Hooty The Harley Owl Motif" is best applied to the cam cover not the rocker box.

I don't think the cam cover would give a good reading. There is little oil there. g
