i rolled more than 130.000 kms with Sporties and obviously nowadays is the bike i know deeply compared to other metrics i ride once in a while... or compared to metrics i rode for years in the past...

personally i think my secret to a long Sportster life (with my limited mech skills) is to leave her engine alone (I.E. no transformations or conversion) and take care and inspect her after any ride how would do a pilot after any fly with his bird...

as for the blow by... my old ride after 80k kms had a lot of that at high revs... i thought it would be caused to worn piston rings though

Usually when we say/write 'blow-by' it refers to combustion gases getting past the piston/rings which pressurizes the crankcase. We (or at least I) did not intend to use 'blow-by' to mean excessive oil vapor getting past the breather/umbrella valves.

It would probably have to be more specific like 'breather valve blow-by' or something along those lines so as not to be confused with the way 'blow-by' is typically used in the context of crankcase pressurization. If this language were Deutsch we could just coin a new word like 'breatherventoilpuking'.

I'm at 91.5k miles on my bike. The only thing I would call a "major" issue is when I had the main drive gear output bearing let go. Very similar to Chris's bearing failure. The cage let go and the bearing followed.



When I rebuilt it I put 100% metal caged bearings in except for the ones that go on the trans. shaft under the gears. No other option for those, but they're more reliable. The only reason they run the PA66 cages is for noise. They have better lubricity, but in the applications used here that's not really an issue.

Other than that the only thing is the Hammer 1250 kit put on about 43k miles in. Blowby hasn't changed since install, about 1qt per 5k miles.

Lost my engine around 13k.
Just 2 months after installing v&h cleaner, fuelpak, and shortshots on a stock 48. Bike was always dealer serviced.

Lots of headaches later I've concluded I sucked water into the cylinder. So I can't really blame the evo for bending its rods.

Found a low mile ebay engine, tossed on a hammer 1275 kit, and a damn aircleaner cover, and sitting around 22k miles now.

I'm a German auto mechanic. This has me rolling currently. Absolutely right up the alley of that "technical" German that is always so hard to get translated.

Had the shifting bits go south on my '09 at 70,000 miles. And the clutch. I don't know if the one problem caused the other. First it got hard to up-shift into 4th. Everything else worked OK. Then the clutch started to slip about 5,000 miles later. 400 miles from the house. By the time I got home, it wouldn't go up into 4th at all. The rest of the motor, when it was all apart, looked fine at the shop. 22,000 miles later, & it's still good. None of the techs at the dealer could tell me what caused it. A detent ball had cracked, or the bits that the ball slides into had broken. Then other stuff got bent, but only enough that they actually had to get out the calipers & micrometers to see what was messed up. They put the gear box back together 4 times before they finally got all the right parts & got it to shift correctly.
