Great Pics!

Why did the hooligan burn the bridge?

Your ride report is fun to read.

There's no good answer to why people do evil things - They didn't catch the perp, so we don't know what excuse they would give...

Labor Day 2018 - I was out riding today - When I set out on my ride mid-morning, the temperature was already in the upper 70's. Within a couple hours, it was near 90 degrees. Fortunately, I was riding in the forest most of the time until noon.

My first stop was at the Mont Alto State Park.

This area was designated as the first state forest and forestry state park in Pennsylvania. It's located on Route 233 south from Route 30, over the mountain, a distance of about 9 miles. It is a small park but offers this very large pavilion for picnicking.

In 1902, the Commonwealth purchased the land of the iron works & the park/resort owned by the Mont Alto Iron Company. The park had picnic facilities, a swimming pool, a carousel, refreshment stands, and hiking trails.

This building housed the carousel. (read more at my ride report link below)

I wanted to re-visit the Martin's Mill Bridge. It was being refurbished the last time I visited in 2015 and I wanted to get some fresh pictures of the, now completed, one million dollar refurbished bridge. You can read my 2015 report on my Motorcycle Chronicles ride reports using the link in my signature below - Look for 'Greencastle Area of Franklin County - 2015'...

Just north of Greencastle, I stopped at the Enoch Brown Memorial Park.

This park is dedicated to the memory of the schoolmaster & students who were killed by indians in 1764.

The nice morning had given way to a hot & sticky afternoon - The clouds had formed, and while beautiful, they also were dropping rain in various places. When I rode thru some heavy forested areas, the roadway was still wet from the passing thunderstorm.

But the trip was without drama, other than the normal raft of idiot cagers.

Just a short note here - When I got back from my previous ride, I noticed the throttle return cable was broken - So I ordered both new cables...

It's been raining so much lately, there really wasn't good weather to ride - I'm still waiting for some time in my schedule to lube & install the new cables - Hopefully before the next nice riding day...

I finally got time to replace both the throttle & idle cables...

Then, today, I got to take a nice 40-mile ride in the countryside - I only stopped for this one picture...

What a great day for riding - Even though it was overcast for some of it - And rain threatened a little bit...

I headed out on a 200+ mile ride thru the best mountain twisting roads I could enjoy - WHAT A GREAT DAY TO BE ON TWO WHEELS!!!

Woo Hoo ! ! ! !

Midway between the Pine Grove Furnace & Caledonia State Parks (off Rt233) is an intersection for the Shippensburg Road - I took that turn today.

The former home of a local physician, the Stewart House (built in 1784) is now home to the Shippensburg Historical Society.

When I left Shippensburg, I followed Rt533 west. It is a great ride over the mountain. Along this route there are a number of very sharp turns, listed with a 10mph speed limit. As you can see, these hairpin switchbacks do require some caution... But it is a fun adventure!

This bridge has a creation date between 1793 and 1824 and had some rehabilitation done in 1910. Known as the Fannettsburg Road bridge, it is considered 100 feet long and 18 feet wide.

On top of one of the ridges, just off Rt75, is Cowans Gap State Park. I decided to ride up the back way to the park using Stumpy Lane. This picture is from the south end of the lake looking north.

I rode south to McConnellsburg where I refueled and had lunch. Then, heading north on Rt522 about 6 miles, I chose to take Rt475 toward my destination. That was a great choice. I happened past this abandoned house and just had to turn back to get a picture. This route was a serendipitous gift to an already incredible ride.

This is the Orbisonia Station for the East Broad Top Railraod. Unfortunately, this excursion railway stopped operating at the end of 2011.

Here's the EBT Roundhouse, built in 1882, for garaging the locomotives. There are 8 bays, each 73' long.

Out riding again today - It was a typical October day - Very cool (60°), bright sun and brisk wind. Very invigorating!! But as the day wore on, it got more overcast...

This is the view looking back from the Eternal Light Peace Memorial toward the town of Gettysburg...

This is the monument to the 6th New York Cavalry. They arrived on June 30 before the main battle and skirmished with Confederate infantry until relieved by the Union 1st Corps.

Riding again in mid-October... Temps in the low 60's...

I decided to stop by the Richard M. Nixon County Park Nature Center... There are not only displays of local animals but also international animals which were a donation by a nearby supporter.

This is an educational center with many, many, many mounted animals that allow young and old to get an up-close look at these animals, birds and insects.

This is a nature center not to be missed if you are in the area.

These bird displays are said to have been collected from the 1890's to 1910s.

As usual, you can see the rest of the pictures using the link in my signature...
