The honor of having a "sticky" on this forum is enough...

I looked around to see what was available on the store shelves for those that don't have the right junk in their garage & came up with this:

It's made using a 6-1/2" carriage bolt from Lowe's. I cut the bolt for an end-to-end length of 6-1/8" maximum. The "sleeve" is made from a lamp part that I got at Lowe's (two 6" pieces for $3; enough to make 4 tools):

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Portfolio-2...-Pipes/3659640

I think that it's a standard 1/2" OD out-side threaded pipe for light fixtures and a local lighting store might have them in fewer quantities and shorter length:

https://www.grandbrass.com/category/...eaded_nipples/

I cut mine to 3" length but you can use a sleeve up to about 4" maximum. It fits snugly, so you'll have to dress the cut end on the inside.

If you want a cleaner look, Lowe's sells a 1/2" OD steel tube that's described as "WELD STL TUBE RND 1/2" but it only came in 36" length and cost $9:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-0-5...SABEgI1cPD_BwE

The carriage bolt head tends to hook around the "post" on the brake shoe, so I ground my bolt head down to avoid that but I don't think it's necessary.

Recommended common tools:
  • - cutting bolt & sleeve: grinder or hacksaw
  • - dressing sleeve & bolt ends: grinder, Dremel tool (or flat & small round files)
All-in cost: $4.75 (but I used a nut that I had in my drawer, so call it $5).

I know that I have broken a sweat doing that job. Nicely done.
