Default Screamin Eagle Wiring

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the Screamin Eagle 32633-96 QSE 6800 RPM unit?

Or could anyone possibly tell me which wire is which and what they lead to on the stock loom?

I've got a 1999 XL 1200 that is in parts and I'm putting back together. The wiring has been hacked into before I owned it. So it's unfortunately not just a plug and go scenario..

I appreciate any help.

I've got coming out of the unit:
- Pink
- Red/White
- Purple/White
- Green/White
- Black
- White/Black
- Black/White

Welcome to the XLForum...


The original ignition module for a 1999 XL 1200 is a nosecone ignition - The 36333-96 is the external type that was used up thru 1997 and requires a Cam Position Sensor in the nosecone location...

Presuming you know you are implementing that version (not as original), here's the functions that go with your Color List:

P1 - White/Black --- IN --- Power In (from Kill Switch) (also to COIL(+))
P6 - Purple/White -- IN --- Input from VOES (vacuum switch)
P3 - Red/White ---- OUT - Power to the Cam Position Sensor
P5 - Green/White -- IN --- Signal from the Cam Position Sensor
P2 - Black/White --- xx --- Ground for the Cam Position Sensor
P4 - Pink ---------- OUT - Trigger to Coil(-)
P7 - Black --------- XX --- Ground from frame/battery
P8 - not used

That was indeed a quick reply.

This is my first Sportster build. And in fact first HD build. Done a bunch of Japanese and European ones. But that only serves to make me think I know what I am doing.

So learning the specific names as I go.

There is a Cam Sensor plate installed on the engine. Right side below the soda can-sized round cover. I'll do a search and double-check the wires / colors for this.

The bike was running fine before tear-down. Except off course the one photo I forgot to take was when I unplugged the ICM.

However I can not seem to locate the VOES sensor on the OEM loom that was taken off.

Usually on the back side of the Upper Center Engine Bracket - Looking from the other side, it is behind/above the intake manifold - Although some folks move them around to other locations...

Look for the VIOLET/WhiteStripe wire in the wiring loom - Of course, since the original nosecone ignition wiring has been altered, that wire might have been relocated rearward of the battery to the external ignition module location...

Is/was your ignition module mounted behind the triangle plate, rearward of the battery?

The Ignition Module was actually stuck to the bottom of the frame. Just below the oil tank. The bike in its previous state was a bit F%$Kd with. That's why it was a cheap doner for this custom build I'm doing now.

I traced the violet/white stripe and it ends in a plug that is bridged.
So I guess that explains why I can't find the VOES.

Any thoughts on if that is a very bad thing or just a thing?

The whole loom will be a stripped-down loom. Built with the M-Unit by Motogadget at the heart. Although this doesn't change the ignition circuit much.

All major manufacturers of Ignition Modules recommend using the VOES on street bikes. The VOES, at higher vacuum, will select the more advanced timing curve for better cruise and idle timing (which also helps with fuel mileage)... When being aggressive, with the throttle open and therefore low vacuum, the VOES will call for the ignition module to use the 'less advanced' curve (called the retarded curve)...

If you're running wide open at the track, it doesn't really come into play...

This reply may be on absolutely no use to you..but if you are dealing in wiring AND the 1999 bikes used the same connectors as the later bikes..this site will be of use to you ..

Seems like it would be too big a risk to try and get away with.

I'll check that out now.

There's a Screamin Eagle carb on the bike. So I will check today also to see where the sensor plugs in. That might give an indication of why it was removed/bridged I hope.
