The tank is fill by the return line, I doubt it will cause gasket failure.

It'll create drag on the flywheels as they have to pull thru the extra resistance in the sump.

The scavenge gerotors in the oil pump should eventually send the excess oil back to the tank since they are bigger than the feed gears.
In normal operation, more oil comes out of the engine than goes into the engine judging from the oil pump gearing alone.

But, excessive oil in the sump can also be blown out the breathers (umbrella valves) into the air cleaner and carb then on the ground.

But, once the excess clears out, there is no damage but just a mess to clean up.

...and on the rider's right leg. Ask me how I know!

When used to fill to full mark, both of my Sportsters used the umbrella valves as an auto-leveling feature...until the level got down to the 1/2 way point on the dipstick. The quickest way to accomplish this was to ride 80 MPH for at least one hour.

I do not recall if it was on this forum or Sportster.org, but there were reports of pre 04 models launching the oil cap, after overfilling. That is likely why H-D went to the new caps in 2004.

It's one of the 3 lines coming off the tank and exits behind the drive sprocket cover to the ground. You'd have to unbolt that cover under the rear exhaust pipe (on the right side) to get to that end.
