That's a question I have also.
The ambient oil temps do not allow oil to flow past the oil check ball as fast especially in cold weather.

In 12 degree weather, my engine finally idles down after 15-20 mins on the freeway.

Rocker boxes seem to get very little oil, almost a spray or mist of oil.
Next time the rocker boxes come off I am almost tempted to tap a hole where I can open it and squirt about an ounce in each box after the bike has been sitting for a couple of weeks.
Probably not a good idea, but not sure if it would hurt anything.
a 15 minute ride seems like a pretty good idea even if you only do it once a week with shorter trips in-between.

Side note: (I like to cruise at night sometimes, riding down county roads in Alabama because it is cooler in the evenings.

Hate that it is taking so long, but the Indy has earned my trust.
Going to be riding it a lot on shorter trips just to break it in.
Then I will be doing some road trips, camping along the way, at state parks.
Easier to camp in the parks and have access to warm hot showers when it is cold).

Surprised the rockers do not need to be bathed in oil.
Obviously everything works well as designed, just surprising,
Used to V-8's and Automotive engines being bathed in oil.

Sorry for drifting a bit off topic.
So many oil choices, hard to stick with just one option.
Each of us have different needs, but there is a lot of common ground and some bikes seem to last forever.
All long term, well ridden bikes have one thing in common.
The owners change their oil often and stick with one brand and type.

But I try to look at all sides.
I got so tired of the arguing over oil choice that I decided to see what the arguments were.

When the chips are down, everybody is right.

Parrothead got some really good used oil analysis on HD oil.

But others are saying HD oil is no good.

Others have used brand X for years and there engine didn't break down.

Amsoil, Redline and a host of other 'glam' oils are really good oils.

But, each one using whatever oil is subject to a breakdown.

These are mechanical engines and all mechanical things fail.

Some Sportster owners have the money to shop around.
To others, their Sporty is their only way to work.

Frankly, it's cheaper to take a bus or a cab than to pay for higher priced oil because so and so says their oil brand is the only one that will protect your engine.

So, I've been shying away from most oil threads unless I can learn something from it.

We are all learning from each other and on a forum like this we have the convenience of not having to experience everything on our own.
Marketing, advertising, hype, all contribute to our confusion, but when we find something that works for our style of riding, it is easy to duplicate the results.

As a guy who now works PT at an Amazon Sorting Center. Only job I could get with a Decent starting rate. I use what I can afford. Sometimes I experiment with different combinations of Oil and Filters. To see what gives me the best value. Like on my 2016 Hyundai Tucson SE. Found Pennzoil Platinum oil and Bosch DP filters give me good performance. As I observe the oil to see how quickly it gets dark. When I worked at Sears Auto as an Advanced Tech, Best we had was Valvoline Syn and Pure One filters. The shop Closed back in July. My boss let me take some oil home. Also didn't care I changed the oil and filter. Using the Syn and Pure One filter. About 2k miles later, Oil got really dark. Changed it back to my normal stuff. Back to the Sporty. 1900 Miles and my oil still looks clean. I do plan on changing the Oils and Filter soon. Probably in Nov. As I think we will have a bad winter.

viscosity can be confusing.
sometimes apple to apple is not a good indicator.
when you deal with synthetics,the verbiage can change.
the wording could go like this: protects the same as 50 weight.
the truth is, it runs like water but protects the same due to its tendency to adhere to parts.
now for the general populace, they need something to compare to so the use words that they should understand.
another case in point is how they rate tires. you know they still use the same standards to the old bias clothe tires. although still made, they are very uncommon. now consider for one, side wall rated as 4 ply but yet they are only 2 ply. the newer and latest/greatest construction of the 2 ply is the same as the older standard of the 4 ply clothe bias tire.

AFIK, there are passages in the pushrods and rocker arms to distribute oil pumped from the lifters and oil passages in the block.

Yeah, oil comes up the holes in the pushrods to the rockers based on oil pressure from the lifters.

Oil leaves the rocker boxes through vertical holes in the cylinders and also by way of the pushrod tubes on the outside of the pushrods.

So, oil mainly comes in one way and leaves by two.

And sometimes excess crankcase oil ends up in the rocker box as well as in the A/C through the umbrella valves.

Oil color is not an indicator of oil going bad. Heat causes the add pack to turn darker in some oils. Some diesel oil become black in the first 100 miles. Darker oil just shows the detergents are doing their job at cleaning and holding contaminants in suspension. The only real way is oil analysis.
