Default 1250 Rings

Hello All

I am tearing my 1250 down due to blow by and plan to replace the rings. I think it died from being stored to long without running and the synthetic oil dripping off leaving dry start in spring. What I need to know is do all 1250 pistons use the same spec rings or do you have to buy for your kit you installed? Can I just give it a hone to ruff up the bore and change the rings and not do a major prep to do the switch?

Thanks for the info.

TF

Did you do a dry and wet compression check?

Define died?
Ask me how long mine sat without running while I worked on upgrades.
When you shut the engine off, their is an oil film left there until you start it back up.
Both synthetics and dino leave this film.

How do you know you have excess blowby?
That is usually recorded on a hot engine with a compression gauge.
If you've not torn it down yet, can you do or have you done a compression test first as seajay mentioned?
Detailed procedure is here in the XLFs Sportsterpedia if it helps.
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...:ref:svcproc20

Changing rings is a major deal and you really don't want to skimp on the details.
Re-ring job is usually suggested with a honing job also.
Done right, each cylinder is sized to it's particular piston and the rings are clearanced per cylinder.
So it's not like changing a gasket.
On Evos, the cylinder will distort a few thousandths when bolted up.
Likewise boring or honing is usually recommended with the cylinders bolted up into torque plates first to match installed conditions.

If you still feel the need to re-ring, contact whoever sold you the 1250 kit.
They can give you the info on what rings they would suggest.
If not, check with the manuf of the pistons to get their suggestions on the proper rings to use.
