Maybe this simplified wiring diagram would help. It's from Sportsterpedia.com

I would think if you are doing away with the start switch you could just cap them off, separately not together as that would send power to the starter, since you are doing away with the switch I imagine you are going with some kind of manual switch?

let me back track for a moment, how many wires do you have currently going to your factory start switch? My thinking is you should have three, obviously you have a grey and white, there should be another, one should be the "hot" (+) wire, one should be the "run" wire, and one should be the "start" wire, being that you are doing away with your "kill/run/start" switch, the hot wire should tie directly to the "run" wire, and then the hot wire should branch off to one side of the start button, and the "start" wire to the other side of the start button.

the white wire goes to the start button and to the kill switch.

You ever thought about using a starter with the start button built in?

Still should be three wires going to it, from what I have been reading the 03 has the same wiring schematic, I will check it in the AM.

My apologies it's been a long time since I've seen the stock controls, I forgot the "kill/run" switch was separate from the "start" switch, so looking at my schematic, the grey and white should go together.
