FYI for price comparison,there is a guy on Phx local c/l that charges $50/hr. I would think he could do a case in an hr minimal charge. Not sure where you are, but there is probably someone comparable. $50 no muss I would think would be cheap, not sure what you value your time in a passion project. No post cleanup. The soda is minimal clean up if you go the home route.

someone painted my cases black in the '70's.i wanted to remove it cases together in the frame.i scraped most of it off then used aluminum wheel cleaner for the rest.it has a mild acid in it.be careful though acid means acid.

Brownell's, the gun parts supplier in Iowa(?) offers a DIY product called "Cerakote" and a different product (Lauer?) that is a 2 part epoxy finish in a single (trick) spray can that is near indestructible. Both available in a variety of colors. Both probably more wear resistant than powder coat. I've used both on firearms but I like the epoxy better. These products might offer alternatives to the "ship it elsewhere" procedure for parts finishing.
