I have been waiting for a spinal fusion surgery. I have been out of work for 2 weeks and watching every game. I liked what I saw from Chile. Brazil is o'k, the Mexicans represented well. USA had a tough game but they stayed at it and finished with a good W. I will be watch Ivory Cost next. How exciting.

I completely agree with the point you're making. It's one of the (many) things that I dislike about the modern game and why don't usually follow it. I've always preferred (and played) rugby union.

Football is a great game and so easy to play any time anywhere with just a ball and little or no organisation. It's a shame that professional football has so much wrong with it these days.

I am watching Cameroon and Croatia now. Good to see Bosnia and Croatia representing well. Small countries with some skills.

I agree. I still like the game for all of the skills and athleticism. The referees are getting much better at not allowing the dives. I like the fact that the teams have their own styles and tactics. The problem most people have that say they don't like football is they don't understand the game. They only watch the ball, they don't understand the play off the ball. I have friends who say it is boring, but think baseball is great. I don't get it, a game that has non stop action vs a game where they watch players spit, scratch their balls, and adjust their batting gloves after every pitch.

I agree completely and I especially hate all the arguing with the ref. I too prefer (and played) rugby union. Myles.... surely you listen to Test Match Special?

Not for a long time. Good to have it on in the background, though, whilst sitting in the garden on a summer's afternoon sipping Pimms or gin & tonic, eh?

It brings shame on FIFA that they allow the arguing with (not to mention surrounding and jostling) the ref to continue. It could easily be cured if they were penalised by moving the free kick or whatever ten yards closer to the goal of anyone giving lip, same as in rugby. "Do you want to move another ten yards closer to your own goal, or are you going to STFU?"

It has always professed to be a "gentlemanly" sport. That's often laughable.
It's competitive. But, the part that irks me is that there's a loss of sportsmanship.
Sure. We play to win, but you shouldn't need to cheat to do it. There's no - dare I say it? - honour in winning by nefarious means.
There is so much wrong with FIFA. Yet we still watch. We still play. I love the bit by John Oliver on the FIFA World Cup corruption. Google it for shock and giggles.

Football is a game for gentlemen, played by hooligans.
