Technically, that's a mixture of Ohm's law and Watt's law.

Also, that "VA" in the Watts quadrant is really misleading. I know he means volts times amps, but the term "VA" has a different meaning than watts when it comes to AC circuits and reactive loads, because the current and voltage aren't in phase.

Volts Amps Reactance (VARS) is a measurement of current lagging behind voltage with an inductive load. In the summer, with high inductive load from air conditioning, capacitors are added to power lines to offset the inductive load, referred to as power factor correction. For M/C load application, volts x amps is VERY close to wattage.

you are also missing the point
the HD regulator is a series unit, it is NOT like a PWM regulator that controls its own destiny.
the protection circuit is what shunts any current to ground. IF the pmg is with in the zener control range , there is NO gate current so NO current flows to ground.
if the stator becomes saturated the is NO counter emf so resistance drops and current rises, hence over current protection is needed.
even on wind turbines there are safe guards to prevent this, mostly to control speed as that is easiest then over current next. if you control speed, you control output, hence probably one of my problems as i often take her to the limits.
anywho, not material, just wanting to know what the life expectancy was, from what i am seeing here, i am in the normal range.
since i am a tinker, i will experiment before i drop cash for a new one.
she'll have to wait as i have a steel guitar on the bench in want of some powder coat before the undercarriage begins. i do appreciate your input, and i do respect your opinions.
it should be a simple operation unlike the buffer i was forced to rewind.

Power factor correction has been going on in industrial units running electric motor driven machines since probably forever.

Just an addition to my previous post.
My staor leads showed proper continuity. They also showed continuity (dead short) to ground.
After removal from the bike the leads still showed proper continuity plus (dead short) continuity to the stator.
I was running Redline GL-5 gear oils in the primary /trans. NO evidence it had compromised the copper wires.
If Cycle Electric starts offering a regulator or 3 phase system I'll be upgrading.

well you are in luck, they do make 3ph regulators
just because it is BT does not mean the XL cannot use them, just remember to factor in the correct amp capability.
there are also many companies that offer the stator also.

well to speed things up, got a good deal on a ce stator, will rewind the other bobbin. it had a layer to layer short on one of the poles. the stock magnet wire is #15 or .060 ish and this aftermarket is way smaller and well formed, the ce says needle wound but it looks more scatter wound than not, just like the original so the big diff is the insulation used, gauge seems the same but i did not measure it.
i am taking your advise since there is not a hard sell on the mobil one being a safe GL5 lube and going to use 20/50 engine oil.
