550-580 pounds wet would not be a bad weight given it the other bikes in the field. However the BMW GS and Triumph Tiger are putting out 130-140 HP and the KTM puts out 160 HP. It will be interesting to see what the HD bike puts out. Performance wise it may be in the ballpark, hopefully the other specs will be as well.

I definitely think the Pan American is gonna have more Torque. I still think the engine looks very much like the V-Rod, with a little different aesthetics on the outside.

Personally I feel, Insert foot here, that HD has used a lot of the material they have as it is traditional and what the Faithful want.

now saying that.

This bike is not marketed to the Faithful, it is a show piece to where they want to go. Such as with the live wire project, they can break traditional HD ground here. So coming in lower in weight than the competition is feasible. My bigger concern would be how they tune the engine, low down for torque or higher up for HP.

remember the puff job of a mini series, Harley and the Davidson's? Remember They kept saying a bike you can go anywhere on? Torque also rules in that venue.

After all HD has always marketed torque.

I've been riding dual sport/ adv bikes since 1986. I wouldn't call myself an expert but I will say that there are different classes within the Adventure bike style.

I usually ride the middle weight / 650 class. They weigh in the 400-450lb range.

The light class is 250-450cc and weighs in around 250-400lbs.

The 1200GS claims 580lbs and the KTM 1290 say 490lbs curb weight.

Real world, the rider and his gear are around 250-300lbs and more if you 2up.

That 800lbs plus gets pretty scary if you try to single track at speed. Momentum is sometimes your friend to carry you through the slick stuff, but sometimes it's your enemy too when it's time to brake and change directions.

So the Pan Am needs to be about balance...... low COG, capable suspension, easy torque, good highway manors, and reliability. Weight matters, but it's not everything.

The new motor is stressed in the frame, water cooled, and overhead cam. No reason for it not to weigh a lot less than the Street Rod's 620lbs. So I'm guessing 580lbs and 112 hp with lots of torque.... a lot like the Yamaha Super Tenere'.

I ride with a guy who has a Super Tenere' and another guy who has a 1200GS. I've done a lot of multi-day trips with them NC-FL-MS-NC and also to Colorado. I was on my Vstrom DL650. The only time you could tell a difference was when we were on interstate at speeds above 75mph. Off-road I could leave them way behind. They rode with street tires because they knew they weren't going to be where they were going to drop it.

So I guess I'm saying again that weight is important, but not real important on that class of bike.
