There was a thread om here a couple days ago and people were discussing the Ultima Ignition System. I'm looking at what is best for a mates bike. I have only used the Mallory systems as I only do 900 style engines. Mostly I use Magneto's anyway.

But yes. The Ultima Ignition system was designed for use on Ultima Engines. Those engines have much better combustion chambers and only run 28 dehrees at full advance.
To get around that some guys are moving the plates to static time it 12 degrees advanced to start with. That plus the 28 degrees of advance the module provides gets them to 40 degrees necessary for our poor old Ironheads.
Much better to actually re-program the module for a custom advance curve.

If the front cylinder is showing a carbon layer on the piston (normal situation) I would have to guess the rear cylinder alone was "worked on". That is the piston was cleaned or replaced.

So, if that's the case I have to ask myself, Why ? Why just one piston cleaned/replaced ?

Generally, that indicates a problem that damaged the piston.

Dual plugged heads and Ultima Electronic ignition system. Color me suspicious but I would be wondering if someone who wasn't too au fait with Ultima's was playing around with the timing and managed to hole/chip a piston.

This of course is all only conjecture on my part.

There could be something totally different going on here.

But if I had dual plugged heads and an Ultima ignition system I would want to take advantage of that. But it would mean being absolutely sure it was all set up correctly to begin with.

No other Ironhead is going to start as easily or idle as well as an engine running that configuration. Set up correctly.

Electronic Single fire, dual plugs with a good curve in it. I only wish I could program a curve into my magneto's.

How much easier can starting a properly timed and tuned IH with BPI get?? Does it start itself when you put in an Ultima??

Actually, I probably should have noted the only Ironhead I can kick into life now is my 74 XLH. It has a button I can just depress.

For you young guys. life is so much different.

I have started an Ironhead by hand, I would never attempt that if it did not have Electronic Ignition.

only the head gaskets are different.the base gaskets and rocker box are the same.
