You have only described one symptom. The sooty plug.

Apart from that, does the bike start, idle and run fine ?

One of the good things about having dual fire ignition is it's easy enough to check part of your ignition system by simply swapping the pugs and leads.
Swap the front plug and lead with the rear cylinder and see if the problem changes to the rear cylinder.
If not, the ignition system is unlikely to be at fault.

I have had a number of engines that just "eat" one plug.

Sooty appearance indicates a too rich condition. Normally a too rich condition will happen to both cylinders not just one.

Some carburetors have an accelerator pump which squirts raw fuel directly into the venturi of the carb. This is done through a nozzle at the front of the carb. With the air cleaner off if you look directly into the carb as you twist the throttle you should see this stream of fuel. That stream should be directed to the middle of the carburetor throat but it is possible to have it aimed incorrectly towards one side or the other of the carb.

If neither of those things produces a result I would begin at the basics.

Check the cranking compression.

I am old and my eyesight is not good. But the second photo looks like an Evo to me.

If that's the case the answer is simple.

keep the plugs and replace the bike with an Ironhead.

I will give that a try and see if my problem is still there. It was running fine until about a week ago. Now it won't idle without choke so I'm checking for air leaks at the moment. That would point to an air leak on the rear cylinder.

Or a big air leak in the front and it has to be so rich to run the rear cylinder is getting washed clean. (not making any heat)

Don't those carbs have a backwards idle mix screw? (turn in for richer)

But that doesn't fit with it not running with the choke off, check for plugged low speed jet?
