Default Aftermarket Speedo and TSM question (speedo speed signal output)

Hello,

I'm looking for some info on how to keep the stock TSM working with an aftermarket speedo on a 1998 XL883. The original speedo has a speed signal output that goes to the TSM. The new speedo I bought doesn't have this output. How do I get a speed signal to the TSM so that the autocancelling function works? It surely can't be as simple as wiring up the speedometer and the TSM in parallel to the speed signal from the speed sensor?
I already found a graph on sportsterpedia of the speedo output signal but it doesn't really help me much.
Thanks in advance!

There is no real solution to that problem for the original TSM. The Speedo sent a pulsing ground signal to the TSM on the WHITE/Green wire. You cannot use the VSS for this function. Aftermarket Speedos do not provide such a signal.

You can purchase an aftermarket TSM such as a Badlander.

I'll give you something to try - Please report what happens with the TSM function.
Without the Speedo - Connect the TSM Cancel Input (WHITE/Green Wire - Pin5) to Ground.
Then try the Turn Signal functions. Let us know what happens.

Interesting suggestion, as cutting that wire disables auto-cancel.

interesting to say the least mr. sportsterdoc
vss signal to the speedo gets converted to counts per mile and output to a frequency to voltage driver to run the speedo needle.
then if the tsm needs a pulse signal then i would assume x count from the vss is converted to y counts for the tsm, never check but is interesting.
since i do not run stock gearing, i run a badlands speedo corrector which is a bucket brigade circuit so many counts in and so many out and is adjustable 10>15% either way.
not sure on that year but does the time out circuit still work?

I'm actually fishing for the results myself - As I heard somewhere (in the foggy past) that grounding the GREEN/White cancel signal wire from the speedo (ONLY 1991-2003 MODELS) could/might/would make those older Canceller units default to a time out function. I haven't tried it on mine, so I don't really know the results.

Grounding that wire (on those model cancellers) certainly will not hurt anything because the Reed Switch (or electronics on 1995-2003) in the speedo does exactly that - in providing pulses.

The VSS signal is a much faster signal (than the speedo cancel signal) and I'm quite sure the VSS line is not intended to be sinking the voltage/current of the canceller. In fact, the VSS signal was said to lack consistency in properly triggering the speedo function (check out the SP for more info).

I hope the OP tries that suggestion and returns with the results.
