Me either TBH. But then I don't buy the $19.99 sets from Wal-Mart or HF either. Ive had most of them for 40 years. Not saying it wouldn't be a valid fix at times. The stock breather bolts did seem like the docket didn't go on very far but if I recall the 11/16 always got it off without issue. Just had to be sure to get it square.

They're stainless steel. Got a chap with a lathe to run them up for me.

So l got my breather bolts off today. YAY
l ground down a socket. someone has been in there before me.....
they were a bit torn up.
after all this dicking around, l ended up buying a complete S&S filter kit and breather bypass online here in Aus. the k&n filter was $110 alone, so l bought the kit. l went with that coz l have S&S slip ons on the bike already.

Yeah, no I didn't. Cancelled the order. put a k&n on it and did the spark plug boot breather conversion.
Not a drop of oil mist, looks totally stock, and the bike is running so much better!
I suspect it was jetted for a k&n and the s&s slip-ons, and the previous owner bought new stock paper filter not knowing.
The bike pulls well now over entire rev range, and not running lean as my mate can smell it behind me. not worried as l'm getting 220km out of 12.5 litres.
I might check the jets one day, but l'm happy to leave it alone.
Thanks for the help everyone. I took some photos of the breather mod, but gotta work out how to post them.
