Exclamation Oil Filter

63796-77A, This is the HD # for the 30 micron oil filter that is used for my Sportster. There is a part # change update, 63731-99A and this is a 5 Micron filter. Seems to me that a 5 Micron filter is going to pass more unfiltered oil, until it reaches operating temps PLUS slow the oil return in general. I'll stick with the 63796-77A filter, don't want to sieze a crankpin or something because of lack of oil! Oil filters are just as important as the oil you choose.

9+ gallons a minute isn't going to starve the motor for oil. Isnt the new HD premium used for the Sporty and BT 5 micron?

I understand how a by-pass valve works, maybe I should have said "Unfiltered oil", but by-pass valves, all seem to have different pressures to open them. So, if you use say an AC Delco oil filter, it takes 11-16lbs of pressure to open it, where a Harley specific filter's by-pass valve only takes 4-7lbs of pressure to open. Too much by-pass pressure, I think, leads to wet sumping or overflowing oil tanks and lack of oil getting to where it needs to be. If I'm wrong point me in the right direction....please.

IE" 30 PSI inside and 25 PSI outside the valve is closed

You are correct about the bypass opening if the filter is restricted. I'm not sure how one can tell if it's too restrictive or not, any ideas?

The oil pump will move x-amount of volume per RPM, no matter where it goes, it WILL move at a fixed volume flow rate - no more, no less. If the fluid doesn't have a place to go then the pump will catastrophically fail (blow up). The only way the pump would move LESS oil is if it doesn't have any coming in, and air comes instead.

...So your concerns about more bypassing, with a "tighter" filter, may be valid. (Due to the fact that the oil pump will still move the oil volume, wherever it goes). Someone with knowledge of oil & micron ratings should look into that.

I'm not one to blindly trust other's engineering either, but I do think it's safe to assume that HD has thoroughly studied myriad options for oil filters and engine longevity over the years. I'm just going to keep using the same NAPA (Wix) filters that I always have, because that's been working fine for me and everyone I know.
