There are defintely problem threads... but there are issues on both sides of the fence...

The OP starts by blurting out what they want to resolve - but provide very little basic information for others (not there) to catch-up to the OP's current situation... They overlook the fact only they know what they have done and seen to reach the question...

On the other side, you have six helpers (on the forum) who jump in, still without knowing what model the OP has and what the OP has already done and seen... They offer six to ten suggestions about four different areas of the bike (multiplied by each of the six helpers having a different approach to problem solving)...

No one (on either side) takes a few minutes to layout the current circumstance, the path that was taken to get there and what skill level or tools are available to the OP... If the OP doesn't say it, the helpers should be FIRST asking some basic questions to get that information on the table - The suggestions (only a few at a time) should be put on the table AFTER the basic information is truly known. This would limit the number of wild goose chases that take place and the number of crazy rabbit holes that are jumped into...

Then the OP doesn't understand half of the suggestions, only does a couple of each from the helpers and moves on to two other questions without really stating whether they resolved the original question or simply got distracted by all the lightning & thunder from the helpers...

And the helpers on the forum are of all type backgrounds - they may be very competent working on their own rides, but teaching skills or proper technical support concepts are not everyone's strong suite... So, everyone jumps in, half-informed, following their own inquiry (trying to be helpful in their own way) but which may provide nothing meaningful in pursuit of a resolution to this particular problem... Not everyone is organized in their thoughts or in their approach to problem solving and their shotgun advice reflects this... Throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks is not a valid troubleshooting methodology (although, when all else fails, brute force, trial-and-error is called for)...

And just when you think you're getting close to a resolution, the OP starts a completely new thread --- with some of the same questions --- and lacking 90% of the information gleaned in the previous thread --- Frustrating...


I'm just glad those type threads only represent a small portion of what happens on the board... If those type threads significantly increased in frequency, I would be turned off to participate in the forum, because it would be so hard to find the threads that represented good help in an informative way... Threads that I could learn something from...

I dunno.

If all you need is good information on how to fix your Ironhead problems - all the answers are in the FSM, the stickies here and Sportsterpedia.

I find me and a LOT of my friends actually keep turning up to race meets for the social side of things. The racing has become secondary to us.

A lot of people like detective stories.
