Default Older thread, ideas on its not starting.

Hi Folks,
Read through this tread today.
Kinda mystery on the rear cylinder throwing flames.
Maybe miss timed, but then the front cylinder seems to run normal.
If the carb was messed up, the front cylinder would not run correctly.
My first guess is the rear cylinder cams problem.
Maybe the gears were miss marked for install?

Yeah, a lot of life has gone on lately. Been back from deployment for a while. Divorced now, in the middle of military retirement processing, got a great girlfriend, own place, still in San Antonio, lost 50 pounds, starting running ultra marathons (skipped right past regular ones), bought another bike, and I've actually been working on Hambone. I like making all my broad, sweeping life changes at the same time. Keeps things interesting. I get to keep my motorcycles in the house now too.

Right, deployment was a morally rough one. Done with the whole defense industry scene. Going to contract for a year or so after retirement then I'm moving to California to open a bike shop and an art gallery. Ex-wife is getting a lot of alimony so it's like completely starting over financially too. Neat.

The new bike? Yes. It's a 2004 Triumph Thruxton.

Bought him in January and we've been through a lot already. Tuned, suspension overhaul, nice long trip to New Orleans and bike - which is not comfortable on a cafe racer when you're in your mid-40s. But still fun. My girlfriend rides too, so we had a great trip.

Moving on to Hambone, the Ironhead. I got tired of fighting the starting issue. Threw away the other Ultima box because it popped and smoked too for no reason. Pulled the the wiring completely off. Threw it away as well. Cut extra crap off.

Safety shoes.

Welded some new stuff on.

Wasn't really feeling the stock rear wheel and drum brake. Enter the Suzuki SV650 rear wheel with a Triumph sprocket carrier to make the width and spacing jive.

I also didn't like the 35mm ancient front end. So I sourced a new set of triple trees from Cognito Moto in Richmond - they make drop in trees to put USD sport bike front ends on Harleys and other bikes - and sourced a front end off a 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R.

I think the Triumph tank is a nice touch as well.

So there we are. I installed the front end yesterday (18 June). Waiting on the oil tank from the fabricator because the original one I got will not fit this frame. More updates as I go along.

Probably right on timing being my starting issue. I will pull things apart again to check mechanical timing. I put an electric ignition on it right when I got back from deployment, with new coil and still had problems so it has to be timing. Everything else is straight. Tired fighting it though and wanted to move on and make some forward progress.

Well, I'm not doing anything on Ham tonight because I'm waiting on rear rubber and an oil tank to get here. So I'm researching fender steel, kicking around how to do the headlight, I know controls and especially setting up the rear brake will be some fab fun. Plus its raining like crazy outside.

So picture time. Why not?

Did some time out in Connecticut test firing MP5s for work.

That's Alex, he's a little crazy.

Went to Colorado and Utah to explore ghost towns while my girlfriend went ice climbing.

Abandoned power plant in New Orleans.

Some deployment stuff.

Thank you Sea!

Fancy camera, yeah sort of, but honestly that whole batch from my last post were taken with my phone. It sounds trite but the best camera is the one you have in your hand.

Why Cali? Good question. It's expensive, there are a lot of people, strict regulatory requirements for SBOs. But weather. We're looking at San Diego. Mil friendly, good art and bike scene. We've got a lot of friends in the artist community there and in LA. A lot of us former war dogs who just need a change. Looks good to us.

Do I get to see my daughter more? No. She hates me right now. But she's 19 and doesn't know better. She'll come around eventually.

Hiking, oh yeah.

Not a lot of pictures of it because we were smoked, but Tiff and I did the rim to rim to rim at the Grand Canyon. We're a little old so we didn't run it, and took an hour nap at the bottom on the way back out at midnight, so the whole shootin' match took us 23 hours total. Probably about three hours total rest that entire hike. Woof.

Pictures, yep.

Here's some more from the NOLA trip.

Tiff - "Why are you taking my picture?" Her scrambler in the background.

More from the power plant.

Random

Some cemetary action.

A little post trip clean-up.

The canyon trip, my 42nd birthday actually so it was fitting. We did it with so little dedicated pre-training that it was pretty difficult. The rule of 7s. Seven down, seven across, seven up, then reverse for a total of 42 miles and I think the total elevation change is 19,600 feet. Woof.

This guy did it two days after we did, but took the longer, not so steep route.

https://www.outsideonline.com/229926...im-trail-diary

Regardless. It's the toughest thing I've ever done.

On the way down. Oo Ah point on the South Kaibab.

At Phantom Ranch.1 giving our feet a rest and a wash.

There was still snow at the head of the North Rim trail. Phantom Ranch.2 was at midnight and we slept on top of a metal picnic table for an hour. No pics from the morning as we were pretty crabby and not very photogenic.

But we did crash the San Antonio RockNRoll Marathon without paying. Were the only ones in costume and ended up in the local paper. LOL. Whoops. Poor Donny, that Santa suit was stupid hot especially after it rained. We crashed the one in Dallas too back in March, but weren't wearing costumes that time.

Cleaning things up tonight and discovered that the top rear motor mount stud is broken and was RTV'd (yes, RTV'd) to the case. Perfect. Only way to get that out is to split the case. Oh goody. I hate the PO oh so much right now.
