Default 124" 1993 XLH build thread.

Hello.
Today the main parts for my 124" engine arrived from S&S to my friend Charley Karlings workshop http://www.karlingracing.com/. Therefor I thought it would be about time to start the build thread here.
Special thanks to Steve Rominski at S&S for making this build possible.

We are still waiting for the flywheels. But with the parts received today, Charley and I can start a lot of actions. Charley Karling can start combustion chamber design, ordering of pistons and varios other parts. And I can start up the frame modification together with UCC (http://www.uccycles.com/), bringing the empty motor as a mock up together with my frame to their workshop.

This will be a 0-7000rpm S&S Delphi EFI street engine. Built for drivability and longevity in mind, not all out maxpower.
Main spec:
  • 4 3/8” bore with a 4 1/8” stroke. (145 Tribute bolt pattern)
  • 8” Carrillo rods (already ordered) with .927" pin diameter
  • S&S B2 heads machined for S&S/Delphi injection and S&S electric compression releases. Combustion chamber designed and machined by Karling.
  • S&S SA cases with max deck height (1" over stock) and machined by S&S for crank position sensor. Fitted with piston jets by Karling.
  • S&S press fit flywheels with BigTwin 1 1/4" sprocket shaft and spread limiters
  • Crank pin will be Karlings own press fit design, Uddeholms steel, BT diameter.
  • Angle squish dome pistons designed by Karling
  • S&S 2 1/16" Dual Bore SA Throttle Body with tuned induction intake.
Today I got this unpacking pic from Karling.

Thanks. Anders "Charley" Karlings expertise is indispensable for me in this project. It was when he showed interest in this build, that it started to get serious. In fact, when I brought up the idea of using the S&S 4 3/8" bore top end parts into a EFI XL design, he reveiled that he had been thinking the same thoughts for a while. That made me confident enough to start the project. Especially since Karling has the knowledge how to design and build a sportster lower end that will handle this 4 3/8" B2 top end.

Among other things, Karling builds his own brand supertwin engines.
This is a film showing such a 4-cam nitro engine. Unfortunately he is speaking swedish in the film. The engines and Karling solutions have been on the PRI exhibition.

This is an animation of the main parts of Karlings Supertwin engines. Using swedish Uddeholm materials.

So my own knowledge and skills is by far not sufficient for this engine project. It's a cooperation project together with S&S and the Karling Racing Engines (S&S dealer).
Karling will produce most parts in his modern shop, using Ironcad and CNC.
The whole package, design etc will be kept together by Karling. Making it possible to produce more 124" S&S/Karling XL-engines of this design, if someone shows interest.
