Default Range to Empty jumps and is on LR most of the time

I have a 2010 XL1200L with 44K miles on it and added the Combo Tach and fuel sensor on it at about 16K miles. The RTE started to Jump around slightly right from the get go, but was not too bad. Recently it is on Low Rng most of the time, but reads correct for a few minutes and then jumps back to Low Rng. Any pointers on where and what to look for? My TRUSTED dealer keeps telling me the system is not that reliable and not to put any more money into it. The range given is very accurate when it is reading something other that Low Rng. Low Rng comes on correctly at the right time if it is the time for it to come on.

The jumper plug under the seat looks to be ok and is not an open circuit.

I just found this site and was happy to find a group who knows something about this unit.

I added the combo tach & fuel gauge kit to my 2013 1200C. 1) I didn't like the fit on the jumper wire housing and had to to ziptie it to keep it connected. The housing was "deeper" than the stock one and would not fully seat. Double check this first. 2) If this was my bike I would run it low on fuel, pull the tank and remove the fuel pump unit. Check to see if the "bunch of wire" moved and is interfering with the fuel float movement. I didn't use the extension wire that came in the kit and the unit works fine on my bike. I had to rotate the filter housing to get the unit back in the tank and was concerned that I may have caused the float movement to be restricted but all was OK. 3) Go back thru the setup and verify that you have the correct tank size selected. If you do all this and still have the issue I would GUESS that the fuel level sending unit is bad and would have to consider spending another $127 for a new unit. I don't know if there is a test for the sending unit but that would be how I would address the issue.

FYI: my Stage 1 & tuned bike gets @45 MPG. Around 130 miles I get the fuel light on the gauge face, checking the fuel range is says @56 miles to empty. If I fill at this point it takes 3.3 gal. If I keep riding around 40 miles to empty I see the low fuel range msg in the digital readout. I ran the bike all the way to zero on range to see how much fuel the bike would take. At 166 miles it took 4 gal. Bike was running fine but that was as far as I wanted to test it. I generally refuel 120-140 miles. I hope this helps you.

Thanks, Sportyman13, my bike has a Stage 1 and was tuned as well and you are right on on the mileage estimates you gave. When my unit is working well the light comes on at 142 miles and I run it down most every time. I use the same pump at the same station so I know my fill is uniform every time I fill Blacklace up. My plan is to check the other two connection points and see if that helps the issue. If not, a new sending unit may be in the near future after I check the wiring bundle as you suggest.

The second stop, below the battery, looks to be where the issue was. Some wires were pulled tight and when I pushed them into the connector everything was working. A short ride and the fuel gauge stayed on for the whole trip. Now after the rain a good long ride will be in order to prove the "fix". It will be terrific if this is the overall fix. Thanks for the support of the site and the individuals who help.
